I have an ungraded episode as an uncompressed QT with EDL that has been delivered to me to grade. I don't have Resolve yet so I thought I'd try and do the graded in Symphony.
Question: Can I do an automated cut detection in avid symphony? the edit only contains desolves and no FX.
Cheers
Mr Timecode:Can I do an automated cut detection in avid symphony?
No. Long standing feature request.
Download a trial of CatDV and use their scene detection - getting that into Symphony is another question though. Hopefully you can export an EDL with just one reel number as source. Or you can export an EDL - import to Symphony (no media required) and use the Pan and Scan 'subdivide' to get add edits onto your whole episode.
Or get Resolve Lite and do the same with their scene detection.

There is a way to do this using the the pan and scan effect. Here's the procedure.
1) First, use Avid's EDL Manager to bring the sequence into Avid.
2) Load the sequence into your record monitor. You should see your clips on the timeline with all the media offline (of course). Make sure this sequence of clips is on V1.
3) Import your QT movie and place this above the sequence you have displayed, say on V2. I'm assuming the start of the QT movie is the same as the start of the imported EDL.
4) Apply the Pan and Scan effect (from the Reformat section) to your QT on V2.
5) Make sure you have BOTH V1 and V2 selected - open up the effects panel for the Pan and Scan effect and twirl-down the ACTIONS section. You should see something called Subdivide. Click on the checkbox next to this parameter and Hey Presto, you should see your V2 layer populate with add edits based on the clips on V1.
6) Lasso all of V2 (to select all the clips) and hit the 'Remove Effect' icon or button. All the reformat effects will be removed, leaving you with just the clipped QT.

So I assume he doesn't have an EDL... your post will be very useful when he uses Resolve or CatDV to generate an EDL based on shot detection though ;-)
this is fantastic. i had no idea that even existed - why in gods name is it in the pan and scan effect instead of getting its own button

And why is the 3D tool in the Blend subcategory in the effects panel??
There is no logic - you are entering the world of Avid, where they control your horizontal and vertical...
Seriously though, the only worry I have is because it's in such an obscure place, the code-writers could just possibly leave it out during a future version upgrade. In fact, I haven't even looked to see if it's still there in version 6!
The only thing I wish it would do, is add edits when you have a blank track (ie on filler), but I haven't managed to make it do that. It only works if you have media on the track to be subdivided.

Because ti's a workaround that takes advantage of the subdivide parameter of Pan & Scan. This was originally created to allow you to pan and scan an existing master.
As for creating an EDL, you can use ReCut to create one from a QT movie.

Bruno M: And why is the 3D tool in the Blend subcategory in the effects panel??
Honestly - Why is there no search in the effects pallete - thats what really kills me. Categories are a stupid way to organize it, just let people do a search for what they want ;)
Thanks Bruno for the useful info...that was the last place I thought to find an add edit function.
One problem I'm having is the Pan & Scan 'Subdivide' function does not acknowledge cross disolves, i had to remove them and add back when colour correcting.
This solution still saved me from manually adding most of the edits.
Graded. Done.
Hi,
Old post now, I know. Well I'm trying to get a proper scene detection following the steps discribe above. The thing is that I have a huge amount of labrolls that I'd like to "cut detect" without breaking the keycode references in Avid (of course), working like this will save me lots of time I guess. So I apply a scene cut detection in DaVinci Resolve 9 Lite on the mxf files the lab gave me, output an EDL and try to send it to Avid via EDL Manager. Problem: whatever EDL format I choose, EDL Manager never see farest than the first line. Beside, opening the EDL in a text editor show me all the cut detection list that I need to proceed this "Pan & Scan subdivide" tips. What am I missing ?
Export as QT refs from Avid, use Recut by VideoToolShed.

Ok, thanks, I'll give it a try. But still it could be nice to get the davinci solution working, because it's free and you know that productions are not always agree to buy plugins to do the job they actually pay you to do !
Well, OK, I tried VideoToolShed Recut (in demo mode) and was able to paste its EDL in AVID and then cut my labroll, it worked just find. Anyway that doesn't appear to be the perfect workflow in my case, where I get MXF files from the lab, because Recut doesn't allow to open them (even if MXF4Mac is installed), so I should export in quicktime DNxHD every single labroll and that sounds not like a time-saving process, right !?
But then I can compare the 2 EDLs, the one created by DaVinci and not working in EDL Manager, the other created by Recut which works just great: the only difference is DaVinci doesn't right any clip name where it should :
Recut EDL:
001 reelname V C 01:00:00:00 01:00:47:13 01:00:00:00 01:00:47:13
* FROM CLIP NAME: start
DaVinci EDL:
001 001 V C 01:21:17:04 01:24:17:20 01:21:17:04 01:24:17:20
Seems like a compatibility issue between Davinci's EDL format and Avid's one. Still investigating !!!
Why aren't you using an AAF out of Resolve? EDLs are ancient technology. (yikes, that makes me ancient)

Still no, but now Premiere can... https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/premiere-pro/using/scene-edit-detection.html
