Lovely Avid Community:
Here is my question:I have video footage in clips (containing 1 video track and 4 onboard camera-audio tracks)I have audio footage in clips (recorded on a seperate audio recorder containing 2 audio tracks)
There is no timecode available. Only a clapperHow should I sync the material?-In a bin by selecting in-points on the video and in-points on the audio track?-In a sequence by dropping everything in and syncing it up using slipmode etc?
What I want:A new subclip that contains 1 Video and the 2 audio tracks (A1 and A2) from the seperate recorder.
I am very confused about groups and what not and how Media Composer ''chooses'' which Audio goes to A1, A2 etc. When I sync it on bin level.
Please help me.. I don't seem to understand it.
Love and thanks in advance,
Helena :)
The solution to your problem is "Auto Sync". Search for it in the on board MC help. It will do exactly what you want and is very easy and intuitive to use.

Dear Larry Rubin,
Thank you. Will I not get a group instead of a synced subclip? I read a lot about those problems on this forum.
You will need to create Subclips. Group Clips are different, you don't need them.
there are several ways, if you have few clips just mark the clapper in Video and Audio with Mark IN, drop all in One Bin, then -one after another- highlight (mark) the corresponding Pairs Audio/Video and choose from the "Clip" or via Right-Click from the Context-Menu the Function "Auto Sync", choose "IN Point" (or whatever Option you have used), you then have a new Subclip containing all tracks. If you dont want all Original Tracks just don't use them or use Method Two:
Doing a Sync-Sequence (also if you have a ton of Clips), You will need to map following Functions to your Keyboard to perform that easely: "Mark Clip", "Make subclip",
1. open a new sequence, add 6 audio tracks (A1-A6),droping all external Audioclips in Track A5 and A6
2. drop all your video clips also (make shure Audio and Video are in the right order, by ordering them by Timecode or Shootig Time, or Filename in the Bin before dragging...)
3. sync all these Video Clips to the corresponing Audio by moving (overwrite mode(red arrow)+mark the clip you want to move+on your keyboard use the 2 keys right from the "m" to move 1Frame left-right, depending on your Keyboard)
4. when you synced the whole sequence, delete then the Audio tracks you dont need in your subclips, move all clips you want to keep to the upper tracks (Overwrite Mode/Red arrow, or Source-Record edit)
5. You will Notice Overlapping Audio (Audio is mostly longe than video) or Video. Delete those overlappings (Highlight Gap, "MarkClip", or just Mark IN+Out, then Extract by pressing "X") so that you have no gaps left, either in Video Tracks or Audio Tracks
6.Make a new Bin. Activate all Tracks in the Sequence. Mark each Synced Clip in the Sequence (Highlight Clip with Red or yellow Arrow and press "Mark Clip"), and make a Subsequence from it (Press "MakeSubclip"), A new Subsequence will be placed in the last active Bin. Do so with each clip in the Sequence and make shure there are all Tracks Active and you have no edits in any track between IN and OUT. (no gaps for Instance)
7. If you have a Bin full of those Subsequences (one from each Synced Pair) mark them all and Right-Click, Choose Auto Sync. Thats it, you now got subclips.
Sounds complicated at first but is really easy once you understand the process. But you will need to know how to move Media in the Timeline.
maybe there are better ways, at least this is like I do it

Autosync is your solution. It syncs the video to the separate audio and drops the video's own audio tracks. A1 and A2 are automatically routed from the audio recorder's A1 and A2.
Set a mark in on the closed clapper on the video track and a mark in on the audio tracks "clap". It's better to be half a frame late than half a frame early. Select both clips in the bin and then autosync. Check the sync in the new subclip. Move on to next clip.
I map autosync onto the keyboard to speed things up. You get into a rhythym after the first dozen or two
