Apparently the issue is with the Fusion Connect plugin and not, strictly speaking, Media Composer.
I have been told that the folks over at BMD have been notified. I have also escalated this to the BMD support team.
I'm posting this here in the hopes that a heads-up may be helpful to those who are using Fusion Connect with 2018.5 or earlier and are thinking about upgrading to 2018.7 (you might want to hold off until we see an update to the Fusion Connect plugin from BMD).
Cheers
Steve

what actually happens?

Hi Marianna,
Funny enough - nothing.
Seriously though - there are a couple of buttons on the effect editor window for Fusion Connect that are supposed to trigger things like the browse dialog (or the 'Edit Effect' in Fusion) and these buttons simply don't do anything. This has been reproduced by Avid developers and members of the beta team.
The only button that works is the one used to generate the proxy files. Not sure if the Fusion project is even created, though - can't remember (reported this some time ago).
My greatest concern is that a finger-pointing exercise may arise but I'm jumping the gun, I suppose.
Thanks tons...
With the launch today my head is reeling and I didnt want to have to install and reproduce if you already knew.
Much appreciated.

Oddly enough BMD has gone silent on this issue. I had reported this to their support team as well but we have not seen an update or even a statement of intent from them. Marianna, if you read this post, is there any way you folks could ping BMD to find out what the heck is going on?
Thx
Bump - Marianna?
Barkin...
Got your Bump....
Checking now for you...
stand by.........
Thx Marianna :)

Guys...
I created an offical case and put all the information in there... I then instructed the tech who takes this to get with Kate the product manager who has the connection to BMD to find out the status of this........
I am following the case.

Well ... Here we are at version 2018.9 with 2018.10 likely coming soon and still nothing from BMD. I was hoping that Avid would have better luck getting some traction on this issue. BMD has been silent on their user forum as to whether or not there will be a future release of Fusion standalone and Fusion Connect. Disappointment all around.
And this hilights the problems with 3rd party apps. You never know when support stops and you have a defunct workflow.
Its no way to run a business.

I agree but MC relies on 3rd party apps / plugins for many of its workflows (from VFX to audio to rendering a final output). In fact, most NLEs do as well to a greater or lesser extent.
I've been exploring Resolve 15 as a substitute for MC simply because it tries to integrate many of the same plugins with better support for Fusion and the potential for far more powerful audio editing. The problem is, I really don't like editing in Resolve (I could get used to it I suppose but I very much prefer Media Composer).

And you've probably explained the reaon why Blackmagic might be dragging their heels on this one.
Before Fusion was integrated into Resolve, having the Edit Connection plugin was a useful way for them to get more people using the software. Now it's fully integrated, they want to tempt you over to do all your post work in Resolve, so there's no incentive for them to fix or support the Connect plugin in the future.
One thing I've never quite understood about 3rd party AVX plugins. Is there an actual contractual agreement between (say) Blackmagic and Avid to support and develop a particular plugin? If not, as Pat says, it's not the best way to run a business.
