• Re: No more Quicktime on windows

The KB article states that you have to uninstall both MC and QT, then re-install QT with the limited options, then install MC again. I'm trying to confirm if this is actually necessary given that you can go into the windows control panel and select "uninstall a program," then highlight Quicktime and select "change" instead of
The problem is not in the player, but in the runtime itself. When decoding the data stream (which contains descriptors about the media as well as the media data itself), a maliciously designed descriptor opens the door. ... If you download a malicious .MOV file and import/link to it, you will fire off the malicious code
Since these problems in Quicktime appear to be well known, is it possible that Windows defender and other anti virus software could be educated to protect Windows systems from these problems, at least until Quicktime can be discarded.?
As I understand it, the exploit is not a virus itself, but a "doorway"

It looks like my last post was deleted along with the repeats of the previous post, so I'll post it again. I just wanted to get some clarification on the exploit information above. Specifically, can the exploit still take place regardless of what program is used to play the QT file? In other words, if I play a compramised .mov file using a program

A few questions about some of the information above: - Is actually "removing" the program necessary as a first step given that you can go into the "uninstall program" section of windows and hit "change" instead of "uninstall"? You can still untick the unneeded components of QT this way, and I believe that this
Hopefully Avid will produce their own AMA plugin that can open .mov wrappers and use a non 32bit H264 decoder so we get Adobe type linked media performance with no reliance on Apples QT components.
Exactly. My concern at this point is not how to do "new" projects, but how to continue to have access

Just to clarify, I have a lot of projects that use DNxHD .mov files that are AMA linked in Avid. These files were created using the QT engine outside of Avid. If I remove QT, will Avid still be able to access these files -- i.e. does it somehow have "native" access to DNxHD mov files without needing QT installed? The nature of these projects

Still no official response from Avid on this? Given apple's reputation for treating windows users with disdain, I can't say I'm all that surprised that they're completely silent on the issue even though the story has exploded across the internet. I'm kind of surprised, however, that Avid has not yet addressed this (at least not that

Based on what I'm reading, I'm not sure that simply removing the web components of QT will actually remove the threat from the exploits. Can anyone point me to some information on whether or not this fuly works to make a system safe? Thanks, L

I often use the "Quicktime Same as Source" export in Avid to quickly output a file in my current DNxHD format for use in other software.
