If you don't care about it being accurate enough for CC then software Full Screen Playback might do you. You don't need any extra hardware. I've had this problem - you want a SD resolution version of a 720p50 project? It's a pain, you can't just set the project type to 25i or 25p as Avid sees these as a different base frame rate. I use a 9800GT and it's been great. You need to use a newer driver than Avid recommends and get RivaTuner to set the OpenGL version string to 1.5. All works quite happily.
