Alright guys...thank you all for your time and input. This method "should" work...but it's not. I've opened a new project, NO cam, and flipped the settings to mimic Douglas' screenshot...nada. Anyway, I believe in putting a round peg in a round hole and using appropriate software when needed. I was hoping MC was an all in one solution
This next suggestion is probably not the answer but I'm going to throw it out there in case anybody thinks they've seen a connection. In the old days I remember seeing the error message you're getting about NO INPUT, when the tape that was place in a deck didn't match the expected sorce tape frame rate

You need to have video to use Punch In. At an audio track you Mark In and Mark Out to tell MC how much duration you need. I'll explore the error I got which relates to Firewire. Knowing you got yours working is inspiring and it just has to be a simple setup someplace that is missed. I could plug the microphone into
I have never tried to record directly as you are doing. So just for fun I tried. Using a Samson C01U USB mike. It worked straight off. I include a screen shot of my settings. I has selected both A1 and A2 audio tracks (as the mike is Mono, I thought I should try both channels as I was not sure which was correct) Also
Punch In Tool. You need to Mark In Mark out at timeline.
I've used the Audio Punch-in Tool as stated in the initial post. What I could do is extend a filler, or an image in my source window, then drop that down to the timeline, and then record from the mic. Such and odd way, but it works, though
