Yes, this process only works from an optical disk. You could try to create disk images from the folders to see if the process will work.

Sorry, I'm quite new to the whole process, when you say 'disk images' what exactly do you mean?

The file structure is completely intact to how it was on the card.

Once you have done the first steps of this tutorial and the AMA files have been linked right click these files and select modify AMA files and choose the same option of Most Compressed video and High Quality audio and it works.

Re: Avid Media Composer 5 and Sony XDCAM HD Proxy Workflow

I tried creating a .dmg disc image for this purpose. I formatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and it didn't work. I tried creating a .dmg formatted with the Professional Disc File Format as well. It took forever to create the image, and then OSX gave me an error saying it couldn't mount it. So it seems, at least on Macs this is optical media only.

Does the Disk Image have the PROAV folder? This is needed for this workflow. I've never tried it personally so I can't say.

It doesn't. I don't even see a PROAV folder on the original XDCam disc, but the workflow is successful when I use that medium.

There is a setting (I think in the Sony XDCAM software) that allows to hide or see the ProAV folder.

In the XDCAM Drive Utility that used with the U1/U2, under Setup - User Settings the option to Show or Hide PROAV folder is there. On a deck, its in the Maintenance menu.

Hide PROAV folder must NOT be selected, If it is, this process will not work.

Thank you, I was able to find it, but when PROAV is showing it causes the backups to be twice as big. I assume it's copying all of the full res files twice when the box is unchecked. That's not really worth it for me, as I'm going to have 100+ 50GB discs.

My media was returned as backed up folders on a HDD. One of them had the PROAV folder, but we had to turn off that option when we found out it doubled the backup size. I tested the workflow, and as long as you have the PROAV folder it works even from HDD.
