Re: DV AVI file import to MC5

With reference to the original question about importing DV AVI files there was a great deal of discussion about it on this thread:

    http://community.avid.com/forums/t/64065.aspx

This procedure seemed to work (with some people at least) but of course wasnt tested using MC5.

1.) Create an appropriate project type (25i PAL/30i NTSC)
    2.) Open a bin, right-click > Import.
3.) Locate a DV AVI file and highlight it.
4.) In the Import dialogue set the 'VIDEO RESOLUTION' to match what the DV AVI is: DV25 420 for PAL, and DV25 411 for NTSC (OMF or MXF is fine).
    5.) Click the Options button.
6.) Ensure that 'IMAGE SIZE ADJUSTMENT' is set to 'IMAGE SIZED FOR CURRENT FORMAT'.
7.) Ensure that the 'FILE PIXEL TO VIDEO MAPPING' button is set to '601 SD OR 709 HD'.
8.) Ensure that the 'FIELD ORDERING IN FILE' option is set to 'ORDERED FOR CURRENT FORMAT' OR 'EVEN (LOWER-FIELD FIRST)'.
9.) Click Okay and then Okay again to start importing the file.

    Hope this helps

    B. Kaulfuss:

There is a simple way. On my PC with MC5 i can link native dv-avi files, captured with adobe premiere, without conversion or renaming, with AMA.

    Greetings from Germany

Hmmm, when I try to link using AMA, I get the following message: "There are no AMA media stream plugins (MSPs) that arer eligible for AMA link to file(s)."

What did I miss when installing MC4 eval version ? What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks for the link Andy. That is great information. Guess I need to improve my searching techniques. I'm hooked on AMA link though. It's a fantastic feature.

This works, and I guess there is no way to avoid media data duplication (AVI-DV being rewrapped in another container format...)...so migrating to MC eventually means purchasing additional disks (not just due to the better but more demanding intermediate codecs, but also to migrate any existing library...). right ?

The AVI imports will only work with MC5.  Pre-MC5, AMA can not open Quicktime compatible files.
