Which Way To The MC5 Upgrade

I have some questions.  The Liquid to MC5 box came with BCC 6.0.6 and there was a free upgrade to 6.0.7.  Avid FX is unchanged in the upgrade still at v5.8.  Avid DVD is going from 6.1 to 6.1.1 ( I presume a minor upgrade), and Smartsound will stay at v 5.5.2.  The only thing in the upgrade would be the Sorenson Squeeze going from v5 to v6, and the written manuals.

    1.  Is it worth $495 for the upgrade just to get the manuals and Sorenson 6, or, (correct me if I'm wrong on this) the auxillary programs, including Squeeze v6 package is $295, but it is unclear if the manuals are included.  From what I have gleaned in Douglas Bruce's tutorials, Squeeze is really not that important a component when going to DVD or Blue Ray.

    2.  Is it more cost effective to just get the free upgrade from MC4 to MC5 (I am a Liquid Convert).

    Thanks for any input

If you don't get the $495 Production Bundle from Avid, then you will have to upgrade all of the 3rd Party apps independently through their manufacturers.  The upgrade from Squeeze v5 to v6 (by itself direct from Sorenson) is $399.

That might be part of Douglas' workflow (to not use Squeeze) but many other people rely on it.  It's a bit like saying "you don't have to cook a hot dog to eat it"  True.  But, I prefer mine cooked, thank you.

I would think as a new user to MC, you'd want the Manuals etc.

Or let me put it this way, I've been using Avid products since 2001 or so, when I get my upgrade from v4.0.5 to v5, I plan on getting the Box.

    Denny,

I just received my MC4 box (upgrade from Liquid) and opened it today (I tried to register it so that I will be ready for the MC5 download when it becomes available, but the registration hit a road bump.  But that's another story!).

Looking at all the material provided in the 10lb MC4 box, I truly feel that it will be a long time before I am comfortable with the Productivity Pack that came with MC4.  In other words, my take is that downloading MC5 and staying with MC4's Productivity Pack will give me more than enough to play with for the next while and by the time I might be ready to take the next step, MC6 and its "new and improved" Productivity Pack could be out!

    FYI

When I registered Sorenson that came with MC 4.05 I received a follow up conformation email that noted this about v. 6.

"Did you know that you are using an older version of Squeeze? This is your chance to get current with special Avid pricing. $199".

Igor, those are my thoughts on the constant wish to always have the very latest versions of applications.
For example Boris BCC AVX filters add another 10 - 20 new filters with major upgrades.
But very few, if any, of those people who clamour for the upgrade can use more than 5 - 10% of the filters they already have. Better spending time getting to know what you have really well, before having to move to the next stage.

    Sam,

Did you, in fact upgrade your Squeeze.  When you follow the link to the website for the upgrade, the cost is $299, NOT the $199 as stated in the email.

Re: Which Way To The MC5 Upgrade

No Denny I did not. One reason is I wanted to wait until MC 5 came out, another reason is that because I never even used version 5 of Sorenson not sure I needed to upgrade.

Re: Which Way To The MC5 Upgrade

    John,

Since I already have TmpGe my thinking at this point is to just get the free download and save the money.  The Depth and Breadth of MC is amazing, and I am sure I will find enough challenges in mastering what I already have.  As they say, cash is king, and if I have saved the funds by not making the purchase of the boxed MC5 version, I can always buy what I feel I really need.

    What do you think???

    Denny,

Since you have 2 ways to encode, aside from Sorenson, you can afford to bide your time.

And as Douglas aluded to earlier in this thread, overcooked hot dogs don't taste any better than "earlier versions".  Between the MC4 version of Sorenson and other encoders, I feel we have more than enough to play with for now.

At this point in time I am tempted to just use the free download of MC5.  Should I go this route, will I still be able to have the 4 years of free downloads, or would I have to purchase the box version to do this?
