Desicion time for MC4 - please advice

    Greeting,

it's been a long way with Pinnacle - many products since DV500. Next is yet another decision for the new MC 4 (going to be MC 5) which is going to be the most expensive NLE decision for me ever taken.

It is going to take some changes to my way of working – I have been quite productive with LE 7.2 – but hey – after the upgrade I can’t blame the NLE software for faults in my movies J

Anyway – I need some clever advice on my new HW suggestion and on the upgrading process. Please help me with comments and alternative suggestions. Here we go.

Today I will order the upgrade from Avid. I will also order the HW with the following specs:

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard (Ultra Durable 3, USB3.0, SATA3, Smart6)

Ram: Kingston 12 GB DDR3 RAM TriChannel (1333MHz)

    Harddisk: 1000GB S-ATAII Fluid Silent 7200rpm(1TB)

    Graphics: nVidia QuadroFX 1800 768MB GDDR3 PCI-E Grafikkort

    PSU: 650W

Sound: 8 channelHD audio codec ALC889a Dolby (SoundBlaster komp.)

    Network: 100/1000 Mb/s Realtek 8111 Gigabit LAN

    Software: windows 7 64-bit professional

    10 x USB 2.0 Porte

    2 x USB 3.0 Porte

    2 x 1394 Firewire

    1 x RJ-45 LAN 100/1000 Gigabit Jack

    2 x eSATA combo Connectors

    8 x SATA2 3GB/s Connectors

    2 x SATA3 6GB/s Connectors

    2 x DVI

Next I wait – hopefully not long.

The add some more disc – like 4TB

    Then install – MC4 – download upgrade – install – finish – all before June 30.

But – what If the HW doesn’t work. Is it adequate ?

    If I don’t get MC4 to work – will I lose the MC5 download opportunity ?

So please – advices are really needed.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

    Welcome to Media Composer!

Is there a processor listed in there?  If there is, I apologize for missing it.

Windows 7 isn't supported with MC4.  There are people who are working with it, so you will find lots of help if you run into trouble, but just so you know.  MC5 IS supported with Windows 7, so in the worst case you can wait 10 days and install it instead.

    Video card is fine.

I'm sure others will chime in on other aspects.

    ciao,
    Carl

Re: Desicion time for MC4 - please advice

Thanks Carl, quite important point ! Core i7-930 4x2.80GHz 4,8GT/s is the CPU.

I'm a bit confused about the MC4 (non windows 7 problem) can I install MC4 to my current XP platform and then install the MC5 download on the new W7 platform ?

    Thanks

I don't get what the HDD is. What is the brand of it?

I feel good for you and for your new system.

Something I would do is to buy an SSD for the OS.

I was at the same root as you:

    DV500 (Premiere) from 1999>Edition>Liquid (pro and others)>MC.

I think that you will find MC to be the best editor like Liquid was for all of us.

Media Composer is the best editor now.

Yes you certainly can. Just be sure to de-activate your MC 4 software license BEFORE uninstalling it, so you can install W7 and then MC 5 on the new platform and then re-activate your license for MC 5. And be sure to use the official recommended Avid uninstall/reinstall procedure.

Thanks for your replies so far.

The harddrives in the system are Seagate 1000GB S-ATAII 3Gb/s Fluid Silent

I believe the Sata 3 connections are for external connections, but is it time for Sata3 intenal drives ?

    Cheers

If I was you I would buy WD or Samsung.

Sata III are for internal connections.

Both WD and Samsung have models for Sata 6G(Sata III).

    e-SATA III are the externals.

SSD for OS and SATA III for Media Files would be a good choice.

Thanks for all you valuable advice.

Spec is now changed to SDD and Sata III discs. And now off to the avid store.

Yes you certainly can. Just be sure to de-activate your MC 4 software license BEFORE uninstalling it, so you can install W7 and then MC 5 on the new platform and then re-activate your license for MC 5. And be sure to use the official recommended Avid uninstall/reinstall procedure.

Actually, to clarify a bit, you do not necessarily have to uninstall MC 4 from your XP Pro platform, but you WILL need to de-activate the software license, so that you can activate that license on the new platform with MC 5. If you want both platforms to be operational, you need to deactivate the license EACH TIME you move from one to the other, since you can only have one active at a time. If you want both platforms to be operational simultaneously, you would need two software licenses.

Is the activation/de-activation required on dual boot machines?

Example, if I have MC installed on vista & w7 (both on same dual boot machine).

Intel i7 4GHz, Nvidia Quadro K2200 4Gb ram, 32Gb ram, 2 Tb Data HDD, 256Gb SSD, various external HDD & NAS, W8.1 Pro 64bit, Blackmagic Design Intensity... [view my complete system specs]

Just to add to the harddrive info., if you wind up getting a Western Digital HD, it matters if you are going to RAID it or not. Their "RE" edition drives are designed specifically for RAID use. You can RAID their non RE drives and you can use RE drives as standalone drives, but that's not what WD recommends.

The difference mosly has to do with error checking. Apparently the error checking routine used on WD's non RE drives can sometimes cause subpar performance w/ RAID.

I think it is because every new partition has it's own MAC address.

If you need the fastest RAID 0 (except SSD) go for Samsung's F.

    Unbelievable fast and reliable.
