    Defraggler

I understand Defragging is not recommended for MC folders. Is it all or certian folders and if certian ones which ones? I have a nice new install on Win7 everything is working so far. I just loaded a project and as I was always aware of system performance with Liquid defragging was a normal process. I would have it defrag over night............

    Hi,

Defragging media drives is not recommended, so leave them alone.  Defragging your system drive (the one Media Composer runs off of) is fine.

Carl is correct. Never defragg your media drives, as they are meant to work in a fragmented mode, storing, retrieving, cueing and seamless playback in real time of various media stream fragments. However, given the vast improvement in drive performance and speed over the past 10 years, the defragging issue may get a fresh assessment in the near future. But for now, don't defragg media drives.

Media Drives or MediaFiles Folders, Larry?

I ask because I have set my defrag program to defrag the whole disk (RAID 0) but the Avid MediaFiles.

    George,

I guess you'll be OK to defragg the media drives, IF YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE that the "Avid MediaFiles" folder is segregated and protected from that process. But I'm curious, besides Avid media files, what else do you have on your media drives? Keep in mind that the media files themselves are media stream fragments, which is why the drives are intended to operate in a fragmented mode.

    Some exports only.

IF deragment just moves the files, then the Avid MediaFiles will not.

I don't have an answer Larry, this is why I ask.

George, if you are in doubt, even the slightest, my recommendation is to NOT defragg the media drives. If you do defragg, you'll be taking a big risk.

    Then it's a good question.

I haven't thought of doing that before.

You mean at the same disk but on a different folder?

    A good question indeed.

How many different hard drives do you guys hook up to one system?  Anyway, renders are media, so don't defrag them.  As for the project folder, as long as it's not on a drive with your media, go ahead and defrag it.

If you're mixing up media files and data files on the same drive, you're on your own; I have no idea if it's ok to defrag just one folder or everything but one folder or individual files that aren't media files on a drive that also has media files on it.

    Re: Defraggler

i just set up my trial version of mc just like i have liquid set up:

everything is on separate physical drives.

    program

    render

media (now exclusively for avid mc stuff)

    projects

    any problems with that set-up?

    Hi,

    touviere7:
everything is on separate physical drives.

This is what I do for Media Composer:

Program & project folders on system drive.

Media (all of it, including renders) on external firewire drive.

To be perfectly honest, I don't know if separating everything gains you any performance or it just overly complicates things.  My gut feeling is it complicates things, so I try to keep it simple.
