OK, I've just seen someone's set. They are capturing HDCam material from a Sony JH3 via firewire for the offline (standard def). They will be Onlining at full HD.
Is capturing via firewire this way going to accurate when it comes to the online?
If you want to be sure capture the donconverted as Letterbox with the timecode burnt in the lower black bar. So you can always check if everything is fine with timecode. while editing just put a real time effect on the top video track to cover the timecode. Or make tests before you start ingesting.
I wouldn't trust FW. I would use 422 whenever possible.

My thoughts exactly. It's not really my show, but I'll reccomend the production Manager goes back to the hire people to get the component cables and 9-Pin control cable.
Cheers.

They don't necessarily need component cables. They could use Firewire for video and 422 for machine control. Do they have a mojo in the system?
But I STONGLY agree with both of the other poster's: Burn in will save your butt in more ways than one. Firewire for machine control is very dicey.

I've not had success in the past with mixing 422 control and FW pics. But anyway, they can use composite or component for the offline. They using 10:1.
Yes, they're using the analogue mojo and Media Composer to digitise and Media Composer Andrenaline (x2) to edit.
Set up the deck with S-video output and RCA audio running into the Mojo. Digitize via 422 as DV25 for the Offline
Firewire is not frame accurate. The way it was originally explained to me is that you are dealing with a packetized stream and priority goes to video, then audio and then the metadata (TC). If there are any issues in the stream, you are only guaranteed to get video on time.
This is one of the reasons behind us originally starting Digital Service Station. Clients could capture using a real deck which made our job easier when it came to finishing time. Below is an article about it from many years ago.

Cheers guys. This was my understanding, but I just wanted it clarified before I started telling other "industry proffesionals" they were wrong!
Thanks again.
