Bump.
Does anyone know a workaround.
My problem is that we are editing a 30 minute cooking show with two cameras. Until now we've been shooting on HDCAM and generating proxies with a Flash XDR. Sadly we have had quite some trouble with the Flash units and now we have decided to try XDCAM HD hence the format itself generates proxies.
Now when I imort the proxies I can't use Autosequence unless I modify the clips so that they have a Source (Tape). After modifying the proxy clips I can't relink them to the highres clips anymore!!!
This is what the console says after trying to Batch import:
Batch import clip 1 of 1 FAILED: C0019S01.new.02 with error: Exception: SM_DF_NDF_MISMATCHBatch imported 0 of 1 clips
If I do a Batch import without modifying the Source all is well:
Batch import clip 1 of 1 succeeded: C0019S01.new.01 Batch imported 1 of 1 clips
If I can't use Autosequence I'm in real trouble because I would have to lay down a ton of clips manually so that I can sync my two cameras and four BWF tracks.
I hope somebody knows a sweet trick to help me out.
Perhaps you can import your XDCam proxies and then consolidate them before modifying to add a source to the .news. Then place the .news and original proxies into the same bin and group the pairs to see if this still allows AutoSequence. If that goes well, try editing with the non-modified proxy visible and hope that you get past the error message above when you try to batch import.
Or- try importing your high res xdcam footage (slower, I guess) and consolidating it after flipping your Project Tab over to a Progressive project- so you can save some disk space by consolidating to DNxHD45 or 36 to edit with. I think you should be able to modify and batch, but I never tried it.
Wish you well. Hope there's better suggestions/workarounds coming...
thnx itmatters for your thoughts.
this is my current workarround:
consolidate the proxy clips. modify these so they have a source. make an autosequnece with these.
then make a new sequence, select all the original proxies and drag them into the sequence so i have all the clips sorted by name in one sequence without any blank between them.
then using a makrotool (from www.videotoolshed.com) i replace each consolidated clip in the autosequence with its corresponding original proxy. my keystrokes for the makro are "tcscbs" whereas "t" is "Mark Clip", "c" is mapped to "Toggle Source/Record in Timeline", "s" is "Got to next Edit", and "b" is "Overwrite".
i just have to make sure that the timeline cursor is set to the beginning of the second clip in my autosequence and the first clip in the sequence containing the original proxies in order to let the makro loop correctly.
but i am still hoping there's an easier way of getting this done!!!
Excellent workaround.

I guess the AutoSequence concept predated the multi file-import concept we need today- hopefully Avid will close this loophole. "File-based workflow support" is their mantra and a stated priority.
From the Sony side, I'm pretty sure there's a brand new firmware feature (soon or just now) that allows their field crews to shoot in such a way that the Avid imports would then import as one clip (instead of many) despite TC jumps, but that may not help since you are dealing in multicam- ask your guru.
I also hope AVID will close this loophole because I am wasting realy a lot of time for things which a computer could do much better.
If the Autosequnce would work I could be up and running after about hlaf an hour (for four XDCAM HD discs and accompanying BWF files).
Now it takes about two hours and not to forget the loss of concentration during these two hours of realy boring and repeatedly steps!!!
So, I would still be thankfull for any Ideas which would improve this workflows :-)

You never responded to this idea- the idea of offlining in Avid's progressive DNxHD. I think getting away from sony proxies is a better idea and visually is a much more apetizing experience. I'm wondering if you tried it?
