    Workspace Size limit?

I've heard that it is best practice not to create workspaces over 2TB. Does this have any merit?

    What's the logic?

Not in my book - we use WS up to 20TB - but then it gets to be a pain to move them if you have to, and if disks start to go in the process... then even the time it takes 2TB of data to redistribute is enough for another unit to fail. You will have to have a redundnancy plan that includes that possibility, and then back that up.

    Re: Workspace Size limit?

With OMFI media on local storage Media Composer doesn't create numbered subfolders - all the OMFI media is just dumped into the folder.

There was no method to limit the file count on a drive except to create smaller partitions like this.

This has never been an issue with OMFI media with MediaNet or ISIS/NEXIS. Media Composer will create a numbered subfolder and limit the file count to 5000 files in each folder. Even on local storage, MXF media always has a numbered subfolder and limits the file count to 5000 files.

There is no reason to limit the size of a workspace.

    Re: Workspace Size limit?

Thanks for the answers. The reason I was given was that after 2TB databases files would start corrupting and Avid overall would start slowing down.

    Re: Workspace Size limit?

This was the case in 1997. Starting with Unity MediaNet, Media Composer will create number subfolders so the database files don't get too large.

It's common for a site with Interplay to have very few huge workspaces.

    This is not an issue.
