      Q. What can we expect regarding Media Composer | First plug-ins?
    A. Media Composer | First won’t work with plug-ins that were purchased previously for another version of Media Composer. Media Composer | First will support AVX video plug-ins and AAX audio plug-ins purchased from the Avid Marketplace in conjunction with Media Composer | First. In addition, we’re encouraging plug-in creators to offer low-cost plug-in packages suitable for Media Composer | First users. Should you upgrade to full Media Composer at a later date, all plug-ins that you purchased for Media Composer | First will continue to work.

    Good luck,

    Ralph

Good luck the only way to edit Xavc-s is using a different NLE or transcode using clip-toolz ... just look at my open letter to avid. If you hope to edit xavc-s in Media Composer you risk to get angry

How does this answer the question about XAVC-S? There's no support for that format in MC. Most other plugins are freely available from camera manufcatureres anyway, the only paid AVX plugins are specialized tools like Glue Tools, Drastic, MusID. So purchased plugins and low-cost variants are irrelevant here.

The basic question is: where is XAVC-S support in MC? That's a valid question many users have. And because it is taking so long, the second question is: how come Avid and Sony (two of the world's biggest brands in this market) can't seem to work together to get this done?

    Re: Media Composer First XAVC-S

I won't speculate, because I can't, but I'm going to apply a little common sense (however uncommon that may be). MC First is going to be a consumer level product. XAVC-S is a consumer level CODEC. One would think it should be supported. DNxHR 8K, probably not.

Seriously, can you really see Avid releasing MC First without XAVC-S? I have a hard time with that one.

Does the $99 version of Drastic's XAVC-S AMA plugin work with Media Composer | First?

Why can't Avid confirm or deny their intent to support this format either with a bundled 3rd party solution or with cooperation from Sony?

I love your rose coloured glasses - where can I get a pair?

Applying the same logic - how much sense would it make for Avid to support a codec for a free platform and not for their paid customers? If (and that's a big if) XAVC-S support is happening I would guess it would be for both products and Avid would already be telling us to stop the nagging ;-)

Can we go back to the way audio nodes used to be selected? Please? ie if you have audio nodes at the same time on selected tracks; then selecting 1 audio node selects them all at that time. Having to shift select nodes or add an in and out is time consuming and counter productive. At least make it an option.

I have them custom made. Rather expensive, but well worth the cost. Cool

I haven't asked the question in quite a while about XAVC-S support for MC First. But I'm going to now that it's about to be released. Not having XAVC-S support would cripple it even for a free product.

The other real issue I have with the lack of XAVC-S support is a clear and concise WHY there is no support for so long and, if there will be in the future, WHY it takes so long?

I assume it is some kind of agreement with Avid and Sony. It is so short sighted for both companies, especially Avid.

How are you going to attract young editors with MC|First when they cant use their own media? Might as well download free Resolve. Right?

    Dom et al....

I agree .......    I do know that the engineering team is working on the required work needed because of the deprecation of QuickTime and the Sony XAVC-S work is part of this effort and we are expecting to have something this quarter.  We will have a demo at NAB.

Stay tuned - I am sur the next month will be quite busy with information on a lot of thigs suc as this, VM, Title tool improvements, NEXIS and PT/MC co-installs etc etc etc etc

And there you go! So Mondo, would you like to order a pair of glasses? Maybe we can get a group discount?

In all seriousness, the real issue is that none of the other NLE vendors seem to be as dependent on the Camera vendors for interfacing with their respective cameras. For that matter, neither are the small software developers. Consider Convert V4 by HD Cinematics. It can read pretty much everything, and I'm certain they don't have a Sony engineer working on their behalf.

XAVC-S is nothing more (really) than an avc1 video in an XAVC-S wrapper. And the XAVC-S wrapper is really nothing more than MP4. In other words, it's an MP4 file. The problem is that because the container format internally is called XAVC it looks like Avid wants to treat it like an XAVC-L or XAVC-I, which are in MXF format. Either that or the check to see that the internal format is MP4, which matches the extension, and it doesn't.

This is why the re-wrap features of the third party products work so fast. All they're doing is dumping the raw data into a different container. And in fact, it's almost the identical container except for the container specification. Avid could make this work just by special-casing the combination of MP4 extension and XAVC container and treating it like an MP4.

A group buy - love it! In all seriousness I thought I'd read somewhere about xavc s dev but didnt want to give anyone false hope. So it is being developed for both products. I 100% agree with your other comments.

    Re: Media Composer First XAVC-S

OK, so I did a bit of digging around, just for grins. And the problem is that mp4 files are processed in MC by QuickTime, and QuickTime doesn't like the format specifier (it's stored in the file header as XAVC, whereas QT wants mp42. And you can't simply rewrite the format in the header as there are other bits in there that need to be altered as well. Now if there was a way to tell QT that this is an MP4 and to ignore the header (which is pretty much what the Windows Media Player does) then it would work. Or why the rewrite to get rid of QT is necessary to make this work.

This may also explain Sony's reluctance to provide a plug-in. Technically it's not their problem.
