Looking to move a project to an external drive to work away from home this week. The timeline has a mix of imported and Linked (AMA) media. How does Avid handle moving Linked media to an external drive? I know consolidate moves imported media but I don't see any option in avid to move Linked media.
I know Red Giant's Media Mover is designed to move all the file dependencies in a project to another drive but haven't found any tutorials on how the relinking process works with it.
Also, what causes the menu item "Relink to file(s)..." to be greyed out?
Okay it looks like certain codecs can be consolidated while being Linked but my project has some that can't be. Just got this error:
Some of the items selected for consolidate contained foreign compression types, which could not be consolidated see the console for details. To Consolidate these clips, please transcode them to a native compression type first.
Is there a list of which codecs can be consolidated and which can't? And is there any way to move them to the external drive without transcoding?
Basically AMA linked media just doesn't move well.
You can copy the AMA sources to the External drive and then link them into a new bin. That will cause the original clips to automatically re-link to that media. (most of the time) But it's not ideal and you have to do the same when you return back to the local system.
Consolidate is best and for waht you can't Consolidate Transcode. But thats not very joined up yet. You have to mannually manage what can and can't be Consolidated.
Basically you can consolidate anything MC sees as @native@ ie codecs it will let you make media as.

Thx Pat, yeah it feels like Linked (AMA) still isn't fully integrated into avid. So I resorted to right clicking on my sequence and consolidating it to the external drive. Seemed to work except it didn't consolidate any of the precomputes? Why would that happen?
Pre-computes (renders) don't consolidate. Just re-render at the other end.
Must think of something clever to go here...

My own workflow for doing this , ís to do a transcode to proxy files to that external drive, work with those files offline and relink on your main system afterwards.

not sure if that is the right way to take a projekt home:
i copied my edit sequence, sifted the bin and let me show all the clips inside that sequence and now transcode all these clips to an external drive.
i hope i end up with a drive with all my main material and all interview multicam in complete form, instead of just new renders with handle frames like if i would only transcode the sequence.
i wonder if i do an aaf export at a later stage of the edit and use the new feature to not export already present media files, if avid recognizes the files from this transcode im doing now and just exports the new clips i edited into the sequence
