Great news!!!!!! We are pleased to announce the release of Media Composer v8.4!
This latest update adds fabulous new features such as XAVC-I Native Support, Apple ProRes Native Support, Viewer Mask Options, Previewing Closed Captioning, Lists Tool Improvements, Timeline Quick Find and more….
Licensing and Activation: The ability to launch Media Composer 8.4 software is dependent on the status of your Avid Upgrade and Support Plan on the date this software version was released (in this case June 2015). If you plan has expired, you will not have access to the new software unless you purchase a renewal within 30 days of the expiration date. Each build (software release) of Media Composer has a hard-coded release date. All Media Composer v8.x licenses (Software, Dongle, and Floating Licenses) will be updated with the active Avid Upgrade and Support Plan start and end dates. Media Composer will poll the Avid Upgrade and Support plan information in the license upon launch, and then compare it to its build date. If your plan is active then you will be provided access to Media Composer v8.4 (June 2015).
How to Update: Please read the How to Update Your License page before upgrading to this release. More detailed information is also available on the Upgrade and Support Plan FAQ page.
FlexVersioner: The FlexVersioner is no longer supported for this release. See the Support Upgrade article for instructions on how to upgrade your license.
Documentation: The latest ReadMe, Installation Guide, What’s New, and more can be found on the Media Composer Documentation page. The Application Manager Documentation page also has a new ReadMe’s and User Guide which is now available.
Compatibility: For complete system compatibility and requirements (including Interplay and ISIS) for Media Composer v8.4 please visit the Media Composer System Requirements page.
Installers: These are full installers for Mac and Windows.
ReadMe and Whats New: Customers should read the “ReadMe” for additions, changes/updates as well as the “Whats New” guide for information on the new features included with this release.
Media Composer | Software Documentation Page with Version Matrix: This will be updated later today on the Knowledge Base.
- Existing: Customers who have already installed the latest version of Media Composer | Software ( v8.3.x) will be notified of the availability of the v8.4 upgrade via the Application Manager or the Download Center as long as their Avid Support and Upgrade plans is still valid. The Apps tab will also provide a link to download and install the update when desired.
- New: New customers who have just purchased a new Media Composer Software 8.4 license with an Avid Upgrade and Support plan for Media Composer will receive the update in their Master Avid Account at account.avid.com.
Also note there's a new version of the Avid Application Manager - v2.4.1. If you install MC 8.4 you'll be prompted to update the Application Manager to 2.4.1 if you haven't already done so.

Can we get clarification on what this item in the ReadMe means:
Bug Number: . DNxHR is not available as a QuickTime option.
I thought 8.3.1 gave us DNxHR QT exports. But, does this mean that 8.4 takes it away?
Thank you.

There is no installation guide for 8.4. Do I need to do a complete uninstall of 8.3.1 first or do I install over the top? I'm on a PC.

ripvanmarlowe:There is no installation guide for 8.4.
I'll ask and see where it is.

I ran it over the top of 8.3 and didn't have any problems.
Just a precision : unzip at the root of a hard disk otherwise you have a message :
"Path too long... during install
Guys
The installation Guide is the same for 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 and now 8.4. I dont know why they didnt redo a 8.4 named one like they did for the rest. I can work on this tomorrow when Nora is back in the office.
For now.... use the 8,8.1,8.2, 8.3 guides as they are all the same.

Install 8.4 over the verion 8.3.x you have on the cPU. works fine.
I did that, installed 8.4.0 over 8.3.1. Everything looked ok, but native prores support didn't worked. Playing proress 4444 files from Alexa was still slideshow. On system2 transcoding of 15s of the same prores material to DNxHD 36 took 70s.
Removed everything and reinstaled MC 8.4.0. Now MC is flying through the prores 4444 files from Alexa. Transcoding 15s of the same material to DNxHD 36 now takes 13s.
Boky
Great news..... Keep us posted on 8.4 progress.
In the readme, it says native editing for xavc-i and prores. What does this mean. neither import, you still have to ama.Am i missing something?
AFAIK it means AVC-I and ProRes are now available as native codecs in 2K and 4K projects, meaning you can consolidate them and transcode/mixdown/import/create Avid MXF Mediafiles in these codecs.
Do we have to update the dongle from 8.3.1 to 8.4?
fdooman: Do we have to update the dongle from 8.3.1 to 8.4?
