I have recently upgraded Edit 1 to MC 8.3 (see system specs). I am atrynig to complete a project which is heavily reliant on animations in Avid FX (v6.4), however it keeps crashing in a way it never used to with MC 7.
Often (and most annoyingly) it seems to happen just after you have finished editing an effect in the AvidFX UI and hiot 'apply' to return to MC timeline. You get a crash report (send to Avid) and thats it. MC unresponsive, although it will save, and all Avid FX edits gone.
I have started saving the AvidFX projects separately, so I dont loose all theat work, but I still cant' then import into an MC timeline and render.
I have resorted to exporting a movie from AFX, but that is really going to hinder my 'tweaking' opportunities when the timing needs adjusting.
Can anyone suggest a cause/remedy?
I dont really want to revert to 7.0.4, but I guess I might have to.

Honestly? Unless there's eomthing in 8.3 that you can't live without, revert to MC 7 until you complete your project, then consider upgrading. It doesn't make sense to upgrade to a new version in the middle of a project, for exactly the reasons you're experiencing.
Pheral - Thanks for replying.
I misled you by saying I was trying to complete the project.
I did upgrade between projects, and spent quite a bit of time cutting non critical projects. Admittedly I didnt pay much attention to the AvidFX in/out process.
Its just typical that the first project I need to tackle 'in anger', that I now need to complete, requires heavy use of Avid FX and I get a problem.
Since my original post I have transferred the project to the laptop (edit 3 in specs) and so far it seems to be behaving. Obviousley a local issue with Edit 1, which I will investigate as soon as I get this project out of the door.
I have the same problem with AVID FX 6.2 in MC 8.2 and 8.3. But in my case I can't even open it in the effect editor. Whenver I try it MC crashes. I got back to MC 8.1 and everything worked fine.
As I use AVID FX frequently and I wouldn't miss new features like background rendering AVID should solve this problem...
As Avid FX is EOL now, Boris Red have replaced it, I think that it might only be used on those earlier versions of MC that it was delivered together with whilst you only can hope for, but not demand, that it also should work well together with later Avid versions, released after the date when Avid FX went EOL.
Tomas
Right, Tomas. But on the AVID homepage following FAQ could be found:
Q: Will the third party software (e.g., Sorenson Squeeze) from Media Composer v7 work with Media Composer | Software (v8)? A: Sorenson Squeeze functions outside of Media Composer software, so a change in software versions will not affect its functionality. Applications that work within Media Composer (Boris Continuum Complete, Avid FX, and NewBlue Titler Pro) should still continue to function. Always check with the manufacturer of the third party application about software compatibility and testing prior to making purchasing decisions.
But maybe one should also look at the Boris FX homepage but I don't think that there will bei any AVID FX updates in the future...
Ok, wasn´t aware of that but also notice that they do advice the customers to check with the manufacturer of the third party application about software compatibility and testing prior to making purchasing decisions

Correct!

I would send a mail to Boris, explain the sitaution, that you have a working payed license for Avid Fx , and ask if there are any special upgrade offers from Avid FX to Red, they are usually very reasonable to discuss with.
mjolnarn:ask if there are any special upgrade offers from Avid FX to Red
Not trying to plug for a vendor but FWIW Videoguys has Boris Red on sale for a few more days. Debating taking the plunge myself. Maybe I'll first ask Boris directly as Tomas suggests above.

things are working good on the mac sidewith Avid FX (6.3) and MC 8.3
i nkow your on PC but just wanted to chime in that nothing changed on the mac side.
I did check with Marianna that both BCC8 and AvidFX6.4 wouild work with MC 8. And they do, on my HP laptop (edit 3 in specs), which is a fully qualified machine (or at least was for MC7, may have dropped off the list now).
I obviousley have an issue with the install on Edit 1, which I need to investigate. I recently did a complete re-install of Windows and built MC up on that, adding Avid FX last of all - the laptop on the other hand already had Avid FX (from earlier versions) when I upgraded to MC8.3, so I may need to look there.
Will report when I discover a solution, incase anyone else is in the same situation.
Quick update for those who are experiencing similar problems.
De-activate MC8.3 and then re-activate it.
That seems to have fixed my problem - I don't know why. I deactivated in preparation to uninstall and re-install MC, but then re-activated in order to go and de-activate AvidFX from within avid, if you see what i mean. But when I went into AFX all was well. I tried to duplicate the conditions that caused crashes but no crash.
I did read something a while back that said you needed to deactivate and reactivate for some reason, never figured it would be connected to crashing behaviour.
Try it anyway there is nothing to loose.
