    Camera Recommendations Please!

I'm planning to purchase two new cameras for my primary videographers here at the college.  They will be shooting documentaries, classroom lectures for online classes and programs like graduation that will air on the campus tv station.  I'd like to spend between $4000 - $6000 per camera.  I have something in mind, but would like recommendations...Can you help?

I am also planning to purchase about 6 cameras to shoot their short films and video projects.  I'd like to spend between $1000 - $2000 per camera.  Recommendations are welcomed here as well...

Be aware that those are 1/3" chips. They are great for ENG, but for more dramatic stuff and low light, I'd much rather have an micro 4/3rds  size sensor or larger.

Along that line, here's my take on the current state of "Best" m4/3rds-and-larger cameras:

    Cheap DSLR: Nikon D5200.

Moderate DSLR: Panasonic GH3. BTW, Canon is rumored to be releasing a new 70D soon.

Expensive DSLR: Canon 5DM3 or Nikon D800.

Cheap full featured video camera: Panasonic AF100.

Moderate full featured video camera: Sony FS100, Canon C100.

Expensive full featured video camera: Sony FS700, Canon C300 and Red Scarlet.

Hoep that helps a little bit. I'd also suggest going over to sites like DVXUser to get more opinions. Good luck!

P.S. Also don't forget about sound. Which means mics, booms, lavs, transmitters, and possibly field mixer and recorder. The quality of camera sound will help determine if you need to buy an external mixer and recorder. BTW, the new Sound Devices 664 looks (and sounds!) very nice.

    Re: Camera Recommendations Please!

Understood, but bear in mind, these cameras are for use by students, and a fully intergrated camera will likely survive longer than a collection of parts. Less loose stuff equals getting a complete system back at the end of the day.

    Re: Camera Recommendations Please!

When it is possible to have absolute control of the subject, lighting, and lots of time, I would recommend a DSLR (Nikon D800 in my case), but otherwise, I propose a Panasonic HPX 250. I shoot the HPX 250 90% of the time because it is much easier to control a full featured video camera when operating in less controlled situations.

    Asus P9x79Pro MB, Intel I7 3930K overclocked to 4GHz, Quadro FX3800, MC 8.3.1 /Symphony, Raid 0 / 3ware controller, Win 7 Pro 64, 32 Gig Ram, Matrox MX02... [view my complete system specs]

I would also recommend the JVC 600. In the UK the BBC has ordered a massive 500 of them for news / docs.

for the $1000 camera you should look at the blackmagic design pocket camera that should be out soon.

    Re: Camera Recommendations Please!

Thank you TV John, this camera is on my list.  However I think I'm leaning more toward

the Panasonic HMC 160 instead of this one, what do you think?

How would you rank these cameras:

    Panasonic HPX 250

    Sony MPW 200

    Panasonic AGAC160

    Canon XF300

    JVC GY HM600

    Re: Camera Recommendations Please!

For the Sony PMW-200 the SXS cards are expensive, scary in the hands of students. Although I run a pair of

Sony EX-1Rs, I am impressed with reviews of the JVC.

When it comes to professional video, unless the client specifically requests it, we stay away from everything JVC - you tend to get what you pay for.
