DS and Media Composer on same system?

We have DS 10.5, windows 7 pro (service Pack 1), AJA Kona K3, GSpeed eSpro raid drives and media composer 6.5.2.  Right now, I just use my media composer to transcode AMA linked footage for the DS, but I have been finding some projects would be better just staying in media composer.  So here's my question:

Can DS and media composer run on my system and share my Kona Card?  My guess is no because of conflicts.  Right now when I open media composer I get the GPU display driver mismatch error (found version 259.81).

If the answer is no, can I install another internal hard drive and create a dual boot system with windows 7 so that I can pick to use either the DS OR Media Composer with the Kona Card?

    Thanks!

You can run them on a same Workstation but not at the same time, which means both apps can share the Kona card but you have to use a bat file for DS which will allow you to turn off the MC setting from the Kona card. I think you can get that bat file from Kona or your DS support guys if you have one.

That's great news!  So if anyone knows where to get the BAT file, how to install it and how to use it, please let me know.

    Thanks!

Re: DS and Media Composer on same system?

This is the information you need:

REM Disable AJA device service prior to launching DS v11. Restart AJA service upon DS exit.
REM To disable opening of the console window, create shortcut to the .bat file and set run to "minimized" in the shortcut pane. @echo off
    net stop "aja device service"
"C:\Program Files\Avid\DS_v11.0\ds.exe" -hv aja -ha aja
    net start "aja device service"

Put this in somefile.bat, place on the desktop and use as a custom launcher for DS. The batch file disables the AJA service and starts it up when DS exits or crashes. This way the AJA service can run for Media Composer or any other applications that use the card.

Re: DS and Media Composer on same system?

I am using Ds 10.5, not 11.  Is that a problem?

    Thanks for your awesome help!

I am not sure as I have DS11. It should be fine with DS10 but haven't tested that, maybe someone else here in the forum has.

Re: DS and Media Composer on same system?

Should I install the following AJA Kona Software:

    1.

KONA 3G Driver for Windows (64-bit) Version 10.3.2, Control Panel, and Notes

    2.

AJA Windows Open I/O Plug-in v10.3.2 for use with Avid Media Composer 6.5, Symphony 6.5, and NewsCutter 10.5

    It's found here: http://www.aja.com/en/products/kona-3g/#support Thanks!

Re: DS and Media Composer on same system?

We run DS and MC and Adobe products that can use AJA Kona 3 cards.

DS does not use the AJA drivers.  MC and Adobe do.  We are using the bat files as mentioned to start all the programs.  The only thing we are NOT doing is setting up the NVIDIA desktop as described in the MC documents.  This causes issues with DS. Set it up the way DS wants.  MC does not suffer in our experience.  I suspect that what will be missing is stereocopic support - not needed here.

We are running the NVIDIA driver that was approved in the latest MC release.  This is NOT approved by DS, but, when setup as DS likes, I have seen no issues.  (This was not the case in 10.5.x, only in 11.0.2)

You mention the Kona 3G driver.  Do you really have a 3G or a 3?  Besides that, we are running AJA drivers 10.3.2, the Open I/O plug and the Adobe plug that matches.

I know Sylvain is cringing now, but this set up has allowed us to continue having DS be a viable tool on our workstations.

So you are saying to install the AJA software, but don't install a different NVIDIA update?

You were right, I only have the Kona 3, not the 3g.

The bat file seemed to work.  I just had to change the ds version from 11 to 10.5

I do still get display driver mismatch when I run media composer:  found version 259.81.  Supported 275.89.  Where do I get this driver if I do have the guts to install it?  I bought 6.5 as a download from avid.  I didn't see any nvidia drivers.

AJA also recommended hyper threading enabling my HP computer.  Is that necessary?

Re: DS and Media Composer on same system?

The NVIDIA driver we are using is 310.90.  The doc in MC says -

"standard configuration requires that the Global preset of the Global Settings for the NVIDIA driver be set to “3D App - Video Editing.”  "

Do not do that.  Leave it as “3D App - Default Global Settings.”

You can find this driver on the NVIDIA website.

As for the MC complaining, read the following:

From a previous post, the GPU check version control receives its version info via the SYS:\Program Files\Avid\Avid Media Compser\Config\QualifiedGPUBoards.txt (where SYS: for most people is C:).  If you edit the version number in that file to the current driver version for your GPU card, you can avoid the alert.  However, you are then responsible for any display related "faux pas" that might come up.

Remember, everything I have shared with you is TOTALLY unsupported by Avid.  It is what we have settled on after our own experimentation.  Do not complain if it does not work for you or makes you system unstable.
