    Exporting 4k in 5.5?

All done a show I'm working on, and the producer asked if it's possible to export in 4K ... Is it? ... Cut this show in RED 4K, but wasn't sure if exporing it as a 4K file meant it actually IS a 4K file. I know 5.5 downconverts to 1080 when cutting, (and renders are 1080) but when I export as a 4K, is it actually 4K?, or a 1080 file stepped up?. Plus this thing seems a bit wonky when exporing from RED off the sequence, seems to crater a lot, so I've been exporting of a mixdown (and there goes the 4K)

    Thoughts?, suggestions?

An 18 minute 4K quicktime is going to be a monster, hoping to avoid it, LOL.

I think MC5.5.3.1 can't export more than FullHD.

I hope I am wrong though.

I really don't think so as well. I can up the dimensions on the export to a 4K file, but I'm assuming it will be an 'up-rezzed' 1080 file.

Ironcially (or maybe more like typically) this show isn't going to air, rather it's a sort of a promo/educational piece. In fact it's going to be mastered to DVD and the web and MAYBE Blu-ray at some point, but the producer wants a 4K file. I get it, highest quality possible, but it's a bit of overkill in this case, IMO.

I think I'm just going to export a normal 1080 file for now and be done with it. That really should be more than enough. Was just curious on the 4K export deal :)

    It is logical.

If MC can't edit/handle more than Full HD how it would be in place to export such a resolution?

I would upresize it on an external app.

Now how anyone will measure the lines lost is another matter.

Even MC V6 is resolution independent so you are limited to all media being maximum 1920 X 1080

Lets ignore that 4K red isn't actually 4000 pixels of RGB!

The normal workflow is to cut in MC to make your tape outputs and bluray deliverables and then if you need a higher res output you'd need to reconform (and grade) back from the original red files in a system that can cope in greater then HD res. DS would be one option but there are others.
