    Finding the Right Laptop

    Hey there guys.

I'm in the process of trying to find a proper laptop to run Media Composer on. I've browsed around the guides and the "Certified" lists, but all of those are towers or discontinued.

So I'm hoping you guys can shoot me in the right direction of what I should go for? I was thinking about getting a Sony Vaio, but then I noticed that it doesn't have the NVIDIA Quadro card, but rather ATI or NVIDIA GeForce GT.

From what I've read, certified is the way to go, so I'd rather not go against the grain. Unless one you has had a positive experience, then I'll change my mind. Big Smile

Anyway, what do you guys suggest in terms of brand, model, etc. ?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Re: Finding the Right Laptop

    Got an update.

Was messing around with the Vaio's "customization" area and chose these:

  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 425M GPU (1GB VRAM)
  • 16.4" VAIO Full HD Premium Display (1920x1080)
  • 640GB Hard Drive (7200rpm)
  • Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit
  • 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
  • Intel® Core™ i7-840QM quad-core processor (1.86GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.20GHz
  •

     What do you guys think?

it may work, your mileage may vary.  I've been happy with my 2 HP laptops. (which reminds me - i need to update my profile)  my latest is the HP 8740w

when there's an issue, i know i can call and be on the "supported" list.

Here's a link to the approved-spec PCs for MC:

You have to scroll past the desktops to see the laptops...

If you depend on your laptop regularly for pro work, it will pay to go for an approved model. I've been using an HP nw9440 when I'm Avid-ly mobile for a few years, and even though no longer approved for MC 5 it works perfectly in 5.0.3.x. Just upgraded this nw9440 to a Dell m6500 (also approved, and much more current machine) for the Avid portable stuff, and it screams. Prefer the HP's, but the M6500 is much less expensive.

Oh jeez...I am SO sorry. I can't believe I missed that! Thanks for all of the help so far guys! I'll keep ya posted if I have any questions!
Thanks a lot and sorry for bothering you with something so trivial.
