Re: Boris Red 5 / Avid FX

    AriVideoGuy,

Did you download the 64bit Trial?

    I did, as I am using Win7 64bit.
But Avid MC is still 32 bit.

I found that Boris Red was installed in the 64bit Programmes Folder and not in the usual place for Boris to Avid plugins!

    Maybe the problem lies there

    Regards,
    Douglas

Re: Boris Red 5 / Avid FX

Douglas, you should use the 32 bits version of Red if you want to have plugins for Avid as Avid still is 32 bits.

The 64 bits version of Red is either for standalone or to be used as a plugin into, for example, Adobe CS5

The standalone 32 bits version works well, it is possible to have them both installed at the same time

Re: Boris Red 5 / Avid FX

    I cracked the problem!

You need the 32 bit version.
It lists Avid 2.0 (that is AVX 2) as a host choice and installs in the correct directory.

What will happen when Avid MC goes 64 bit.... will we be allowed to change the 32 bit version of Boris Red5 for the 64 bit version?

I can confirm now that Boris Red is in the Effects Palette!!

I guess you meant "You should NOT use the 64 bit version of Red" Tomas Geeked

I just figured that out as you can read above.

The new interface is different - so I feel lost in it already.

It will take time to adjust to it..... but I am confident it will be fine.

If you want to have plugins for 32 bits Avid you have to install the 32 bits version however

Yes Douglas, I have just reproduced your workflow and I am seeing what you are seeing, just a scrolldown list without any other info, many users will do this mistake I guess.

As you already have opened up a support ticket about it, maybe you will continue the discussion with them ... ?

Re: Boris Red 5 / Avid FX

    Hello

Just some feedback on Boris Red 5

I have taken the upgrade offer and I have to say that whilst there is a new colour scheme for the interface and some interesting ways that windows are handled, not much has changed in the application itself - except for the inclusion of the FEC effects - which are very good.

However the stability is woeful and the program is barely usable in a test environment and by no stretch of the imagination can it be used for production work.

It crashes almost without fail (or it just closes suddenly).

This is especially a "feature" when trying to apply the FEC / BCC effects in the program.

So far I am very very disappointed with the stability.

    Neil,

I haven't had any of the above happen yet.
I do find that some things move slowly though.

The new colour scheme and new designs for many of the icons/buttons threw me off at first.

I haven't had much time to push it yet.
I have a couple of days off just now, so I will try and give it a harder workout.

I am wondering if you have been following the marathon thread about BCC 3D Objects locking-up some peoples systems?
How do they work on your system?
If you are having crashes with Red5, maybe the same is happening with the BCC 3D Objects....... I am looking for clues as to what is up there.

Re: Boris Red 5 / Avid FX

    Hello Douglas

Yes I have seen that thread - I had some initial problems where an error would apear when I used a the BCC extruded text effect from within MC - I raised it briefly with BorisFX and they recommended an upgrade to BCC7 which was not in my plans, generally my extruded text titles are completed from within Avid FX through MC or on a standalone version of Avid FX and imported as QT movies. So I work around this although it is not causing a crash.

Regarding Boris 5 - it is installed on 2 machines here - all I need to do is to add an FEC filter ponto a track and start playing around with it and it will crash.

Having said that, if I work on layers without applying the filters it seems pretty solid. I can make PNG images into 3D extruded objects, add shadows containers and other such things and all seem to be okay, but applying a BCC filter or an FEC filter and then playing around with the parameters - and crash.(I am playing with the FEC ball action at the moment on a text layer with an underlying video track - making the balls start dispersed and then coming in to form the text - this crashes the system without fail)

Let me know what your experiences are with the effects.

BTW - I have not uninstalled Avid FX as I need this for real work.

Re: Boris Red 5 / Avid FX

I have just been sent this url to an very interesting page of facts on BorisRed5

    http://www.borisfx.com/borisfxwiki/index.php/RED_5.0_Release_Notes

I haven't had time to read it all yet, but it looks like there is some important stuff we should be thinking about before jumping into Red5 at the present time.

One that jumps out at me is "Host Support: Avid Media Composer: 5.0.3 & 5.5.1"
So if you are running MC 4 or 3 etc. tread with caution.

    Well, Neil

That gave me something to test out.

The results of my test are to be seen as I recorded them - watch and wonder....... why is Douglas never seeming to have the problems with Boris products that others are having?

I don't know why I am getting most things to work . . . . . but I am trying to be carefull not to change the balance.

The machine I did the test on is my "Studio System 1" - an older not so powerful setup!

    HERE IS THE VIDEO

    Any comments?

Everyone knows what frivers are - they are the five fine drivers that a computer needs to run on!!!

Can you look at these specs and see if there is anything different to your specs.
