Hackintosh (PC hardware + OS X)

I am starting a thread for those interested in a  Hackintosh. I am no expert but I do have one running (see my sig).

I am using the TonyMacx86 method - iBoot + Multibeast - on a seperate drive. I also installed Paragaon NTFS. It is more dependable than MacDrive.

Yes, my Avid MC 5 is running.

My PC is still my primary platform. I installed it for the purpose of just in case. I will likely convert my Dell laptop in to a Hacktinosh just to make it easier for my wife.

If you guys have any questions - let me know.

I think it does - I will get a confirmation for you.

I know some one who was building a Hackintosh to have enough PCIe slots needed to run a properly configured Resolve (RAID card, 2nd GPU, Video I/O, etc).

regarding the laptop - I have yet to test. There should be a good chance. As long as you have an Intel Core Duo or newer chipset you have decent chance of getting it to work. Usually it is the peripherals that can get complicated.

Early reports seems to be a yes. P55 chipset and dual GTX 2xx cards.

Your first post implies that reading PC-formatted drives on a Mac with Paragon is better than reading Mac-formatted drives on a PC with MacDrive, is that right?

Helps some decision-making here at Elephant Towers, thanks. And Hmmm, a Hackintosh desktop sounds good idea for us in longer term. I love DVDlab Pro and don't want to lose the PC option! Presumably you can still boot up as PC if you want, or am I missing the point?

    Thanks, I love this forum

Yep. Avid sometimes does not like HFS on PC via MacDrive. It will throw an Exception error when reading or creating a file.

Yes. You separate each OS on its own drive. You can select the boot drive during startup (either using your motherboard's button command or a startup utility installed by Multibeast called Chameleon).

There are a handful of "gotchas" that you should be aware of. (for example)

    1. Sleep on the Mac side often does not work. There are exceptions. Usually depends on the motherboard you are using.

    2. During shutdown of OS X, it will revert your BIOS clock to GMT time. This will in turn change your Windows OS time. Not a big deal just be aware. There are things you can do (via app startup or registry change) to compensate for it.

I would test it first before you commit a hackintosh for professional use.

Re: Hackintosh (PC hardware + OS X)

Just built a hackintosh and have it running with 10.6.6 with everything working.. Have FCS3 installed and been messing around with FCP7 and seems to work great.. Haven't done any serious editing though.. Downloading MC 5.0.3 and see how that will go! My build was

    Gigabyte H55-USB3

    Intel i5 760

    Nvidia GT240

Installed with Tonymac's way and after 10 reinstalls(didn't know what the hell I was doing at first!Big Smile) got it working like a real Mac as far as I can tell! Dom thanks for that tip with Paragon! I tried it out using the 10 day trial and its working great! Gonna end up buying it and its a lot cheaper than Macdrive!

Re: Hackintosh (PC hardware + OS X)

Wow i'm impress! Just ran some test footage on this thing using some t2i footage transcoded to ProresLT using Mpegstreamclip link through AMA and it plays it with little hiccups here and there.. The hiccups are probably because I have the clips in my OS drive since this is the only drive I currently have on my hack! Also played around with some multilayer clips putting two clips on top of each other and applied 3d warp on both of the clips and it plaid it with now problem! I was pretty impress how good it ran! I dont know how this thing would be if I do some real serious editing but I guess we'll see!

Re: Hackintosh (PC hardware + OS X)

I tried running the MC trial 5.0.3 on my 10.6.3 hackintosh and get "Buss error at main thread"...

    Anyone know of a fix?

Did you try patching it (5.03.7 or 5.03.8)?
