Hello all,
I have been working with the SpectraMatte effect in Media Composer (version 3.1.3) for a project and have not been getting good results. I am thinking it might be due to poor lighting on the blue screen, but I've seen worse lighting key well. Also, our talent did show up with a light blue shirt (thank you producer) but it is nowhere near the color of our background.
I am attaching 3 video clips below hoping someone might see something they've successfully adjusted before. One clip is our talent with the SpectraMatte effect applied, another is just the talent in front of the blue screen and the other is a recording of the SpectraMatte display from the effects window with the effect enabled. As these examples illustrate I am not getting a clean key. Look closely at the SpectraMatte Display video and note the presence of a grid or checkerboard pattern in both the output video and the SpectraMatte display. Also, the SpectraMatte display appears to have a well defined crosshair image in the center as well. It almost looks like a starburst at times. In the output video you can see vertcal lines around the talent's head. It is difficult to see in the encoded video, but these lines are in even intervals like a grid and they appear to angle down on screen left and up on screen right.
I am fairly new to the advanced features of Media Composer (recently upgraded from Xpress Pro) and it is possible I have some settings that are not quite right. But I did follow Avid’s SpectraMatte tutorial and tweaked the obvious settings. Has anyone seen the SpectraMatte effect present in this way and are there any suggestions for a remedy? Again, it could be as simple as lighting or using a green screen instead of blue (Ultimatte in our live video switcher “likes” the blue screen better than the green).
Thanks

Hey,
If you have Boris CC installed (shoud have come with your MC package) then I would use Chroma key and combine different matte chokers and a light wrap (All Boris plugins) to get a WAAAAAY better result. I've never had much luck with spectramatte.
This link here will get you started with Boris Chroma Key tips:

he has a nice sample too!
Salud!
Thanks,
I'm skeptical I will be able to do this correctly, it seems quite complicated. I did find what appears to be a related tutorial on this procedure from John Lafauce and I thought I'd post it here in case someone stumbles on this thread with the same issue. It is an excellent view...but still complicated.
Thanks again.

Is this footage DV? The results you are describing are very similar to trying to pull a good key from DV Footage. Do you have the facilities to digitize the footage in a higher resolution?

Yep, you got it, DV. My only option to acquire the video is DVCAM. However, I must say that I gave the BCC Chroma Key tutorial a whirl and I am pretty impressed with the result. This example is my first time working with the BCC Chroma Key and BBC Filter effects. I still think I can get a better result with improved lighting on our CK screen. I swear our blue looks darker than others I've seen.
