I've got an effect that looks like it will take 11 hours to render on a 30 minute DV SD timeline, so I check processor usage and though all 4 of the processors are being used, only a small percentage of the total processor power is in use. Processor 1 is at 90%. The other 3 are at about 10% usage for a total of 34 to 40%. Only half of the available RAM is being used. This is bizzar. All of this processor power is sitting on the shelf.
MC 5.0.1.. XP pro, SP3 with all suggested patches. Core2 Quad 2.83 Ghz. Quadro FX 3500. 4GB RAM with the 2700 switch set in boot.ini. This system runs only Avid and Adobe Production Studio. No antivirus or any other software in use.
Anyone notice the same behavior or have an explanation?
Several other bug like issues:
1) Switching from one workspace to another sometimes activates all of the smart menu buttons. There doesn't seem to be any regularity or repeatable trigger for this. It's very annoying.
2) The timeline window keeps moving down. Minor annoyance.
3) Switching out of trim mode the source and record windows will sometimes be replaced by a dialog box. Ooops. Change workspaces and back and all is fine, except that the smart menu options are all now selected.
4) Marquee defaults to Times New Roman with no option to set another font as default. Ok, this is not new and technically isn't a bug, but it bugs me! In fact, it drives me crazy. What, the Avid development team can't figure out how to add a field in preferences to set a default font? Come on guys... this is so backward it ain't funny.
5) In a new project that was created under MC 5 each time I open the project the dialog pops up saying that sequence effects will be updated to advanced keyframes, a new sequence is created and MC opens with the duplicated Sequence loaded. Why? This project was created in a clean install of MC 5. There are no effects that were added in an older version. Very odd behavior for a release program.
it uses ALOT! i can scrub good but cant play the files well at all. im switching back to 4, good thing i didnt buy 5 yet, damn performance crash everytime i start the color correction!

Each timeline that does this auto update has a BCC effect applied. This was a clean install of BCC from the disks that came with MC 4
Anyone from Avid have anything to say about the processor usage? I really upgraded to MC 5 expecting it to use all of the resources available with modern computers. This is a big dissapointment.
I haven't had any processing problems and I've got a six-core processor. It doesn't seem to fully utilize them but I've had none of the performance based crashes.
However, as for you workspaces and windows jumping around, I had that problem at first too. I have two monitors that run at different resolutions, but when I switched them to both having the same height (in pixels, horizontal number of pixels doesn't matter) all those problems stopped. If your monitors are running at different heights, you might try that. Just a suggestion, hope it helps!

I am running a dual display but both are exactly the same with exactly the same settings applied.
I have another bug.
6) I have the clear effect key mapped to my keyboard. If I scroll to an effect that is applied to a clip that also has transitions at each end, and try and clear it, it will remove the closest transition. Let me be clear: The effect is on the clip, the scroll bar is on the effect icon, the closest transition is several seconds away in the timeline and even if the scroll bar is dead center on the effect icon, it will delete a transition rather than clear the selected effect. Apparently I now must be in effect mode with the effect editor open to remove an effect without killing the closest transition.
That works. Then when I come back to source record mode, all of the smart buttons have gone stupid and are selected again. This is a mess. I am now doing 4 or 5 steps where I should only have to hit one key. Oh! But wait, this time the smart buttons weren't auto selected. I still have to jump through crazy hoops to remove an effect.
Avid, I did not sign on to be a beta tester.
That is baffling. I'm sorry I'm not more helpful, but I have no idea why that would happen.

I should have noted that this is a 1080p HD timeline.
Can anyone reproduce this? Put an effect on a segment and transition at each end and try and remove the segment effect without being in Effects Mode.
If I am not in Effect Mode, no matter where I am in the timeline, a transition will be removed before the effect can be removed. Do you experience the same behavior?
Thanks
Sorry but I couldn't reproduce it. MC deletes the effect but not the transition. You're going to hate this, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it?
Bill Hawkins:Can anyone reproduce this? Put an effect on a segment and transition at each end and try and remove the segment effect without being in Effects Mode.
Yes, I have this problem too. But has been going on for several versions, not new to 5.
So if both of you have the same problem, what similarities exist in your system configurations? And since it doesn't happen on mine, how is mine different? (See signature for specs)
I can reproduce this, too. Using MC 5.0.0.1 with a 1080i60 project (with HDV 1080i60 material).
I'll play with it some more.... In this case, I don't have any audio on these clips - not sure if that matters.
BTW - The way to get around this is to select the segment first and then delete the segment effect.
*** EDIT ***
I noticed that if I insert audio into these clips, the problem doesn't happen - actually, the more I play with this, the more unpredictable the results are. Sometimes it works while other times, not.
What I would expect is that if I'm centered on a clip, hitting the remove effect button would remove the clip effect, whereas if I'm off center (near a transition) the transition would be removed...

ColtonVideography:what similarities exist in your system configurations?
Not much similarity, on a Mac here.
I know if you select the segment first, you can remove the effect. But I don't work in either segment mode, I don't leave the smart tools activated. I only enable them when I want to work with them.
Weird. I also only use the smart tools, instead of staying in a segment mode.
This issue appears to have gone away when I created all new settings.

This is still an annoyance that I cannot seem to nail down. I see no consistent or replicatable actions. It will happen once then when I repeat the exact behavior as before, it will not happen. We need to be able to turn the Stupid Tools off.

Please, please, please do something about this Avid.

I don't see any reason or trigger for this. The first time I had this problem it was in a project created under MC 5. The project that I am working on currently was created under MC 4. When I open MC 5 the effects in the sequence are updated to advanced keyframes. That new sequence is saved and the next time I open MC 5 the sequence is updated again. This last time the only change between openings was an addition of a few frames of black at the end of the sequence. It's only a 2 minute sequence.
Effects used in the sequence are:
CC
Color Effect
Flip Flop
Resize
Motion Effect
and a Crossfade transition.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
