    Re: Keyframing in MC 5

I have requested updates on this and several other outstanding issues with MC 5. No further word as of yet. Sorry I can't deliver better news.

    Thanks Larry!

I am back to 4 now and apart from missing AMA functionality it is HEAVEN!

But who am I telling, you all know what I mean...

Well, from my expreience...AMA "functionality" isn't all it's cracked up to be.  Yes it's a GREAT feature - the one true advantage of Final Cut.  But when I use AMA it slows down the Avid so much that I simply cannot use it.

I don't know what others are using, but if I just have a 30 minute SD prorez quicktime on my desktop, it has to think for a few seconds every time I make an edit...if my qt is on a Unity Partition...takes even longer.  I had to simply stop using it.

AMA is "fine." but i keep amc 4.0.5 on my other workstation, cuz this KEYFRAMING problem plus other "problems" kind of irritates me, like paying for my script sync. i keep both copies

    Re: Keyframing in MC 5

Can anyone with 5.0 download version 4 and use that? I never had version 4, but I think it may suit my needs better than 5 based on the keyframes and "smart tool". Would I lose any other functionality?

EDIT: Nevermind - I remembered I would lose the functionality of my Matrox Mini if I went to MC 4. Sadness.

True, there ist RTAS, but it´s buggy. There´s the smart tool, but it isn´t smart. Other than that - only more bugs... The only reason I use MC5 on a project is RED or 7D ingest via AMA. Atomike, sorry about the matrox mini, is it good?

Yes it is - and the only reason I'm sticking with MC5 as the HD monitoring is glorious compared to Full Screen playback.

I have had 3 occaisions today when running Avid FX that, shortly after returning to the timeline, I get Access Violations then a lock up.  This particular error message has popped up a few times and only when I run FX or Marquee - cant give you a recipie to make it happen though, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.  Never had it under MC4...  Then, of course, when you arrive back at the timeline you discover Smart Tools has re-enabled itself... Its these little things when working under pressure that make your day more stressful than it needs to be, and when a client is in, well you know the rest.

And on the topic in hand, the advanced keyframe default is slowing me right down on very basic FX, so many more clicks, sigh.  How about MC4 with a patch to make it work with the MXO - there's an upgrade I'd pay for in a flash?.

    Vote 1 - Dongles.

I share some of your sentiments. However, I've found AMA to be useful when using Canon 5D/7D material only as a "hey, let's take a quick look at the footage that was shot". Editing the material is painful at best due to processing and playback bottlenecks. The material always ends up getting transcoded into DNxHD to be useable.

In addition to that, ever since AMA was introduced, often times I will go to open an existing project and it tells me that I don't have the right volumes mounted (even though nothing has changed). So, it won't let me open the project. I basically have to create a brand new project with the same format settings, then copy the bins over into that new project.

I'm still scratching my head over MC5.0's R&D team and executive decisions. I have yet to talk with an editor who really likes the Smart Tool, the new keyframe implementation, or all that AMA is supposed to offer.

The Matrox Mini sounds good, however.

    Re: Keyframing in MC 5

MC 5.5 is here and it good! But unfortunately simple Keyframing is still gone!

I dont have a problem whith the fact that the start/end keyframes are not there by default, what bothers me is that keyframes are created automaticly by changing a value. When i srub through time to see how the effect is doing on my footage and adjust the values - another keyframe is created and i end up getting a transition that was not intended!

Great would be the keyframing that AfterEffects is using! I can change values as i like and where i like in the clip - it adds no keyframes! But when I add a keyframe and go to a different spot in a clip it auto-creates a keyframe for me! Now that makes sense to me!

Please, please, please can keyframing just go back to how it was. The workflow has become ridiculously fiddly and overcomplex, i find myself unable to do quite simple procedures now.

I really hope Avid take note of this because my office are looking to go back to version 4 as i'm sure alot of other people are.

    Re: Keyframing in MC 5

I"ve heard from literally Dozens of companies around the world who have gone back to MC 4.  I've begged my boss to follow suit, but he just says he can't - that our macs don't "support" 4.  I'm sure it'd work fine, but he's a stickler for specs.

So we and thousands of other users are STUCK with 5, and it's NOT just the keyframing that slows me down each and every day. It's the fact that "Restrict to Vertical" movement in Seg Mode (on mac) was changed from Cntrl drag to +Cmnd Drag - which ALREADY HAS the function of turning 4 Frame Display on/off.  So I'm toggling 4 frame display on/off/on/off a hundred times a day!

It's gotten to the point where ENOUGH voices have been HEARD.  I know from personal experience that the Engineers at Avid see our complaints as simply a nuisance, but how many voiced must be heard before they'll change it back to the way 4 WORKED - worked just FINE.  Keyframing was great, Segment Mode was great, didn't crash every few hours.

Please make a 6 that's basically 4, and call 5 what it WAS......as "wooops".  It happens.  Accept it.  Move on.

    thanks.

I'm curious to know what direct personal experience you've had that leads you to that conclusion, anecdotal or otherwise.
