digitizing HDV for use in MC5 and LE7...

Sorry if this question is a FAQ or clearly explained in the MC user guide...I have really no time currently to dig into the documentation or try by myself (yes, I need to quickly make up my mind for the MC upgrade offer)....

I need to digitize some HDV2 material right now, and wonder how to make it compatible for fast import in both LE 7.2 and MC5, as I am not sure if I will edit the project in MC5 or LE7.2 sometime in the near future.

Obviously, I want to digitize the material as is, i.e. without transcoding of any kind, until I start the actual project.

Can I e.g. use LE's EZCapture or Digitize, then losslessly export to some file format that would nicely import (or AMA link) in MC5 ? Or use some other "raw" HDV capture tool (HDVSplit, etc.)

Liquid and MC use a completely different file format. Everything you capture in MC is in MXF format so you cannot capture in one and import that into the other. You need to decide if you are going to make the move to MC and work in MC for a project. Also, when working with long GOP formats such as HDV, you can edit in that format in MC but to export you need to transcode it to DNxHD before you can export to something like AvidDVD. There are significant differences in the way MC handles long GOP material and how Liquid handles these types of formats.

Re: digitizing HDV for use in MC5 and LE7...

I was afraid of that...but I was hoping that something like linking to HDV/MPEG files would work, much like the AVI-DV situation: http://community.avid.com/forums/t/84891.aspx

    LewS:

But this is maybe simply what I'm looking for...can you please give a few more details on how this would work (and what format the HDV rushes need to be)

And, much like the author of that AVI-DV import post, I like the idea of having generic, editing software-neutral capture formats (be it AVI-DV or HDV m2t or mpg) allowing to use the most appropriate editing tool at any time (and I have also a bunch of native AVI-DV type2 and .mpg HDV rushes on my disks) Stick out tongue.

Looks like the change to MC is even more severe than I expected: it affects not only the way I edit and author video, but also forces me to change the way I capture, manage and archive raw media....really hard to decide to switch or not...Confused

yes, but I don't keep my tapes around forever

I know it's not best practice, but for a number of reasons, I want to keep the original bits on disks (backed up...), not on tape...

And for the DV-AVI or HDV-mpg files I keep around, I cannot tell if today or tomorrow I will use them with this or that small or big editing or encoding or playback tool or device...

Make the switch to MC!... I have & I've never looked back, yes it changes the way you capture, edit, author etc.

It changes it to a much better way of doing things in this case capture/archive, take it from me, Ive used Liquid for many many years professionally for Television under the most extreme dealines, MC is a much better NLE than liquid. If you use MC through your entire work process/work flow you will have no problems.

Accepted that you will use MC as much as your proficiency allows, still many people have Liquid generated fuses to deal with.

...since I'm just a hobbyist slowly "upgraded" from Premiere/DV500 to Liquid 5 then 7, I have different priorities and requirements, so the perception that MC might be somewhat an overkill for me has to be taken into account (considering the effort to change skills & habits + extra hardware investments: more RAM, DISK, GPU change, etc); what's obvious for pros might be less obvious for the lower end of the segment...hence all my silly questions...

I use TmpgEnc Xpress4, but I don't see how it fits here ? I can certainly transcode or remux captured HDV material, but how would that address the question of feeding MC with HDV captured outside of it without transcoding ?

Re: digitizing HDV for use in MC5 and LE7...

    While I'm on capturing HDV...

How does MC capture handle HDV TC breaks/GOP corruption ? (this HDV weakness is a nightmare for me, as I mostly record long shows in multicam, so each TC break of one cam means extra segmentation of the .sync source clip and more work to synchronize with a continuous audio track)

In LE, digitizing HDV adds orange markers where such breaks occur during capture (EZCapture does NOT), so I can retry capture and see if it is simply a "soft" error (or a hard tape dropout) - does MC somehow spot these problems ?

I've only been playing with MC for a few weeks now, but unfortunately, dropped frames (tape dropout) result in the capture stopping (it will save the captured material - or ask you if you want to bin it.)

I share your worries about multicam work, though I tend to find that dropped frames result from tapes that are not recoreded in one go, so I am more hopefull that multicam tapes will have a better chance of capturing in one go.

    Ouch !

But can you resume capture after the problematic section without too much hassle ?

Dropped frames/broken TC during long uninterrupted recordings happened to me a few times already - perhaps dust on the heads or poor-quality tapes; anyway, it happens....time to start thinking about CF media recorders (yet another extra 500€) !
