Hello:
I am in the process to work in a documentary only with still pictures and I would like to know how good is MC and where can I find tutorials to teach me everything related to pictures pan and zoom and specially ROTATION.
I am a Avid Liquid 7.2 user and got the offer to upgrade to Avid MC 4.0 but I am still not sure what to do, I downloaded the demo 30 days application but I have not installed yet.
Thank you for any information related to this.

MC's Pan and Zoom does not do rotation
BCC 6 (an optional bundle with MC) has a Pan and Zoom effect that works very well and Douglas has a tutorial on it here
If you are up to the challange you could use Marquee title tool. I have recently been using it and it allows you to import pics at their native resolution and scale as needed. You can rotate and spin however u like as it is a 3d title app. It lets you animate with keyfrrames and such. If you do a search there is a thread with links to some tutorials. I am still learning it but overall I believe it is a good program, especially as it already comes bundled with MC why not learn and use it.
Thank you AndrewAction and Dew
Ditto - Here is a link to a good tutorial on Marquee - http://learn.avid.com/content/tutorials/# . You need to scroll down to the Marquee lesson.
I don't know if it covers exactly what Dew mentioned - but I am sure the basics are there. I plan to review it again just to see. BTW, if you are new to MC and have not worked through some the tutoirals at this link site, I feel it is worth the time to learn the lesson interface - it's pretty simple and lets you work along with each lesson at your own pace. I really want to thank whoever put that whole training series together - very nice job IMO.
Also, BCC is one of the included programs that comes with the Bundle - so that filter is there.

There is a long standing features request to add rotation to the Avid P & Z effect. Maybe after NAB? We'll have to wait and see...

I'm in the camp of why re-invent the wheel? BCC has a P&Z that does rotation and is included with every copy of MC, so I really don't see the need for engineering to allocate resources to updating the Avid Pan & Zoom effect.

Well, how about users, like the academics, who don't have BCC?

I with Kenton dont waste R& D on adding rotation to the built in P&Z
I have the impression that Avid's P&Z has a lot faster processing from BCC though.

I actually tend to prefer to use After Effects for picture moves etc.
Have to say, I'm with Larry.
The number of times it pops up as a Feature Request should give an indication of how many people want it. In fact, I think it's right up there with 'power windows', 'locking an AniMatte selection' and 'better Audio effects'. And to have a Rostrum effect without rotation abilities was always strange.
I prefer AvidP&Z to BCC mostly because of the render and it has a lot easier UI.
But more importantly, most Offline Suites I know (even if they have the disks) don't install BCC onto their machines for whatever reason. In the end, I guess most Offliners don't use it. They do use AvidP&Z though, and to have to rebuild them in Online just because they realised they couldn't rotate and decided to bodge it with a Resize and 'fix it in Online' is a pain.
Bottom line for me is that if you're gonna have an effect of any kind that that a glaring omission, you fix it.

ps. I'd also like to be able to do some fine pre-blurring for ultra high resolution images, since we're asking...

As I see Photoshop it will make a lot of things that After FX can do now.
Of course After FX is a whole different chapter.
But when you are on a time limit (and you know about that) then you are going at the faster solution.
And for making stills moving this is Avid P&Z. If they add rotation then it will be great.

So over the duration of a project for me BCC's P&Z is much faster with the added bonus of already having rotation. (FWIW Moving Pictures is even faster but I have not brought the rotation option for it)
I tried Stagetools Moving Pictures the full version (with rotation) on Studio 12 and it works fast, but I will prefer to worh within Liquid and in the future probably with MC.
I hope the rotation option is added to MC on version 5.
