My understanding is that if not ALL the clips are selected this will not work.

Even if you left out one only one clip the effect will not be applied.

The clips you want to select for this process are on a single video layer ONLY and must be contiguous. You do not want to lasso clips on other video layers at the same time.

TRANSITION EFFECTS BETWEEN PIPs THAT DO NOT AFFECT THE BACKGROUND:

How many times has this happened to you? You have a background layer of video on V1 and you have PIPs that you want to place on top and transition between them with something like a push effect. Well, low and behold, you set up the PIPs on V2, place a push effect between them and the background gets pushed right along with the PIPs! How do you prevent that?

The trick is to lay down the first PIP for the entire duration you want for ALL the PIPs. Then, step into the first PIP's effect and place "add edits" at the points where you want to transition to other PIPs, edit in the additional PIP clips, and apply the push effect at those points, then step out. Your PIPs will now transition with the push effect without changing the background.

Avid fully understands virtual drives on PC's.

How do you create a Virtual Drive Andrew - is this a Windows procedure, or something you do from MC?

How do you create a Virtual Drive Andrew
There are several commercial products that do this. Google should find them.

I use a free homemade version as follows
    Open Notepad
Copy and paste the following (as many times as you want virtual drives)

subst N: S:\"Foldername you want as a virtual drive"

Replace the   N:   with the drive letter you want as a virtual drive
Replace the   S:   with the drive letter of the media drive your folder is on
Replace "Foldername you want as a virtual drive" with    your folder's name

Save this notepad file to your desktop (I call mine Avid Drives.txt)
Rename the Avid Drives.txt  to Avid Drives.bat

This gives you a basic program that will create virtual drives by simply double clicking on it's icon on the desktop.

At any later stage you can right click on the icon, select edit and modify the notepad file with the information needed for NEW or CHANGED virtual drives you require.

Avid understands these drives as long as you have run the file to setup the virtual drives before you open Avid

    TO EASY.
(Print the .bat file if having a paper based reference would help)

Working example of a txt file that I am using

    subst N: S:\AV_AFFAussie
    subst O: S:\AV_AFFHDConv
    subst P: S:\AV_AFFPAL1

(AV_AFFAussie, AV_AFFHDConvert and AV_AFFPAL1 are all folders on S drive.)

N:\, O:\, and P:\ are now my new virtual drives.

Thanks Andrew - a very old "DOS" command - had forgotten it existed!
