There used to be some Avid Knowledge Base documentation about folder permission issues with Avid. I just ran into one of these issues on a new system, so I tried to find these documents. I found the forum posts that referenced the documents, but the links led to KB pages that said "no longer available."
I went to the KB and did some searching, but I can't find the documents that I saw before -- the ones that had the information I was looking for.
Just in case it matters, the issue I ran into was that I was unable to backup some of my Avid Projects to a drive on a different system -- access was denied. I first tried checking the box to apply the permission from the "Avid Projects" folder to all the child folders, but this resulted in NO permission settings on all the child folders, which locked me out on even the main system. I then went into the Advanced security settings for the "Avid Projects" folder and changed the permission setting from "this folder only" (the default) to "all folders, sub-folders, and files." The "Avid Projects" folder now gives "full" permission to "Everyone," as do all the sub-folders. This appears to have fixed my access issues, but I'm not clear if this was the right way to solve this issue, so I'd still like to find any further information I can on this.
Thanks for any help or info on this,
Larry

Thanks -- that looks more along the lines of what I remember. It looks like the end result is generally the same as what I ended up with ("full" control for "Everyone"), but it was helpful to confirm this with the info you linked to.
Thanks again,
Hi Larry,
I keep that book marked becuase I seem to have lots of issues when I move projects from machine to machine with permissions. It would be nice if Avid could somehow make permissions control more user friendly.
Cheers,
The problem with managing permissions isn't Avid's, it's Microsoft's.
If you're on Vista 64, you can add this functionality to the Right-Click Contextual menu ...

I think I agree with Andrew here. My question is what did we gain by the change that was made? I can not recall a problem before. I do not know, I am just asking. I do know that this has bitten me more than once.
The projects were already in a "shared" location. Previously, however, the User Profiles were under the current Windows login account name, under Avid. If you logged in as another Windows user, the User Profiles seemed to be missing. Moving the User Profiles to a shared location resolved this.
