Actually I hoped to stay with XP as long as possible... Everything is quite fine, is it not?

I just thought that hardwarewise G5 Intel is the fastest PC anyway, and you can have OSX, XP, Linux etc ...

    Re: XPRESS PRO and VISTA

There's no such thing as a G5 Intel. A G5 is an old school PowerPC CPU, the new Intel machines have Xeon processors.

The Mac Pro is indeed a beefy machine, but there's no reason you couldn't build something (or buy a Dell machine) that is just as beefy (just without the ability to run OS X). I'm not sure anyone has got Avid running under XP on a Mac Pro? Anyone?

    Re: XPRESS PRO and VISTA

Hello everybody, the point in the Vista-Avid combo is support for 64 bit and all the advanced features of newer processors. It'll take time. As far as DRM goes I understand that media creation, including output to a master, from original material, protected with the appropriate policy, in an environment such as a software application driving its own DNA (can You think of one?) with its own driver, has to be allowed: it's "an inside job"; how to import graphics, video or sound pre DRM remains obscure to me, but it will eventually work. Regarding Avid on gnu/linux that would be great: an open environment that could be tailored to Avid's needs! As a long time linux user (for home/office) I understand that in the Open Source community DRM is a matter of software licences, see:

    http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/DRM_GPLv3_is_hot_air_Linus_Torvalds/0,130061733,339273084,00.htm

Quote: "Digital rights management and the General Public License cause a lot of 'hot air' to be exchanged but they are not a 'big deal', according to the creator of Linux, Linus Torvalds ... in the bigger scheme of things, neither will stop good technology from prevailing ... Torvalds admitted he has a particular dislike for DRM technology because it makes life more difficult for users."

Google for "live cd media production oriented linux" or check the beta of the next Ubuntu release, with audio and video editing software and an advanced kernel compiled for multimedia: things move fast.

I have to point out that OSX runs on top of a BSD kernel, not linux. Still the Avid source code must be "Intel" for both Macs and PCs, and Ubuntu runs either on top of Mac and/or PC: porting to linux (or to some kind of BSD for PC) should not be too tough. The questions being: will the hardware manifacturers build Vista/DRM compliant hardware? Of course they will. Will that hardware work with an operating system other than Microsoft's? Will Apple adopt Windows compatible DRM? Will we ever see a DRM enabled linux running major applications and proprietary drivers? Why Avid would leave Windows to start all over again in linux?

By the way: I entered the thread thinking that it was about the vst file format!

I have XP running on a MacPro. Working on getting Avid Pro running on it in spare time over next few days after I sort through Protools issues.

    Re: XPRESS PRO and VISTA

I don't think moving to Linux is really a feasable solution. Not for me anyway - I rely on too many Windows apps (like all the Adobe ones for starters). Would be great if they offered it as a solution, but they seem spread a bit too thin with 2 platforms let alone having to cater for 3 (tho moving over to Intel on the Mac side will no doubt cut down their workload somewhat). I'd rather they just hurried up and delivered on some very old promises before devoting resources to something like a Linux port...
