I have media center on my PC and purchased AVID in December. I put off purchasing XP Pro hoping that AVID would go Vista right away. Would you advise against spending the 309.00 for the full version with SP2 and wait a little longer till Avid makes some sort of announcement about Vista compatability? Or do you suggest just getting XP Pro and take the loss if they make a formal announcement, with my luck, tommorow?
I say get XP, install it, start editing, you can always upgrade later on, given my pervious experience with Avid and updates, it could be easily 6 months or more before it's compatible and even so, there are going to be bugs that need to be worked out even once it does become compatible. Also since most people are using XP you will be able to get more help from this forum if your using what their using.
just my 2 cents
the last thing i would do is get vista...even if the os was cool, the graphics card drivers may not work, etc. you'll commit suicide in a week guaranteed. =)
but don't go spending $300 on XP Pro. just get a copy off ebay. in fact, my brother even has a copy (not oem) of XP Pro that i know he's never used. it came directly from microsoft - if you want, email me and i'll send you his email address. i'm sure he'd sell it for a good price.

Do you have problems running it on Media Center Edition?
If not I suggest you stick with it. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
(BTW I have MCE on my machine and it works just fine)

And running across a six-lane highway at peak hour may work for you too. Every time until the last.
Avid mandates XP Pro. Not Home, not MCE, but Pro. Yes, both can be made to work, but if you really want to have a stable reliable system get XP Pro SP2. There are deals out there that can save you money.
And I'll bet this won't be the only "does Avid support Vista yet?" posting in the next few weeks, either. Wait till the bugs are out, the drivers are stable, and Avid announces its supported version of Vista and accompanying hardware.
I imagine moving Avid to Vista will require some fairly large underlying tech changes (given a lot of the tech Avid relies on works quite differently under Vista), so I can't see a Vista'd Avid coming any time soon. Perhaps Xpress Pro 6 but I doubt it.
I'm hoping they do move at some point tho and take advantage of WinFX & XAML to make the interface more solid.
