NOOOO!! I can't believe it! New update has removed "Publish To" in menu!

It appears that the latest update 2023.03 has removed the "Publish To" command in the "File" drop down menu, leaving only the one in the bin context menu, which DOES NOT WORK. For the "Publish To" command to function, the Timeline has to be selected, and right-clicking in the bin for the context menu automatically deselects the Timeline. Please: how do I reinstall version 2022.12? I am completely blocked--cannot continue until I am able to export. TIA

    Hi Toby,

Media Composer| First is the app that contains the "Publish" workflows.  Is that the one yoou're looking for?  When you launch the app, does the splash screen show up during launch say "First" on it?  If not... You may have accidentally launched the trial version of the main Media Composer app, not "First". If so... Relaunch the app, but when you do so, immediately press and hold the "w" key. This will bring up a window where you can tell it to launch First.

Re: NOOOO!! I can't believe it! New update has removed "Publish To" in menu!

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for your response. I am definitely running FIrst, as an upgrade from 2022.12.1. In fact, I have uninstalled and gone back to 2022.12 to solve the problem. The issue is this: earlier versions contained "Publish to" in two separate locations. It was available as a drop-down option under the "File" tab at the top, or it was available in the right-click context menu in the bin. The main issue here, which I wrote about before, is that in order to actually export a file, the timeline must be highlighted, and that is impossible if one chooses the "Publish to" dialog in the bin menu, because a right click to bring up the context menu automatically deselects the timeline.

If I try to export in that manner, I can get up the Publish dialog, asking me where to export to and what and how to export, but as soon as I hit OK the Publish dialog disappears and nothing happens. The exact same thing happens if I choose the publish dialog under file and the timeline is not selected. The only way that works for me (and this behavior has been constant through the last four or five versions of MC at least) is to first make sure that the timeline is highlighted and then choose "Publish to" in the file dropdown. In that case the export works.

In v 2023.03 the "Publish to" option has been removed from the drop down menu under the File tab. I have confirmed that by going back to 2022.12, where it appears under the File tab. That leaves only the Publish command in the bin contex menu, which by default deselects the timeline.

You can check this for yourself. Let me ask you: can you actually export to Local Drive using the publish command found in the context menu for the bin? Because for me, for at least the last four or five versions of MC running as First, and on a couple of different machines, it does not work for me.

I would like to begin this answer with a caveat, and here it is: I do not know if this will work.

You can download earlier versions of Media Composer from the download center:

    https://my.avid.com/esd/Product/Information/7

This next part is the part I'm not sure about.

When you try to start Media Composer, it should ask how you want to activate your license. You should select 'I want to run as Media Composer | First.'

If that option does not appear, or if your licence information for the latest version of MC First will not work on an older version of MC First, then I'm out of ideas.

Re: NOOOO!! I can't believe it! New update has removed "Publish To" in menu!

I really can't believe the Avid guys screwed the pooch like that. I wrote to the forum where you can report bugs and give suggestions, and explained it very carefully. I mentioned that the logical thing would be to move it to the timeline context menu, since it has nothing to do with the bin and everything to do with what's on the timeline. I mentioned that the logical fix would be to export whatever is in the timeline, whether the timeline is selected or not. I Highly appreciate them making First available, but...

    Go to:

    http://esd.avid.com/

    Download 2022.12

Uninstall the present version, unzip and install the downloaded version.

That worked seamlessly for me. Wish you the same

Re: NOOOO!! I can't believe it! New update has removed "Publish To" in menu!

    Well, it worked Geeked

After installation I was reminded by Media Composer on startup that I needed to start it from Avid Link.

In Avid Link there was an update message in the menu item for Media Composer. I clicked 'update' and then everything worked fine. I got the 'publish to' option back in the file menu and I did a test export, which also was fine.

Thank you all for the help.

    Brgds
