Hi I updated to 2022.12 and all of a sudden my kona 3g is not working correctly. The HW/SW button has nothing selected automatically. When I click on it I have the option of Newtek NDI and my Kona 3g. When I just click on the kona and then turn it on everything freezes up. If I turn on the newtek NDI and the Kona and turn it on it works.
However when these are both turned on and I can see through my external monitor I can not audio scrub. It freezes and crashes. If I turn off the kona the audio scrub works perfectly. THis has never happened before. I reinstalled the drivers and it did the same thing.
So I am imagining the kona 3g is finally not going to work right. I know I have read here that it should not have been working for the last few years of updates but I have never had a problem until this current update. It is important to note also that I had windows updates off for years essetially and a few months ago it did an update when I turned it on even though I had it set not to. So maybe the issue is with the windows update. It still worked before the avid update though.
So if this is no longer going to work and all I need is essentially an sdi out to my panasonic monitor to color corrrect/grade, will the Blackmagic Design Decklink Mini Monitor 4k work. This is inexepensive and seems like a perfect fit. It says on the webpage it works with avid media composer. Here is the link
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/decklink/techspecs/W-DLK-32
So If anyone has used the Decklink mini monitor 4k successfully let me know and if anyone has had a similar issue with the aja kona 3g let me know. Thanks in advance.
Any Blackmagic pcie card with an sdi spiggot should work for you. You could also use one of their external devices, depending on your setup...but yes a 4k mini will work with Avid.
You will need to install Blackmagics driver package, which is called desktop video.
As for the Kona 3...sorry i quit using mine about 10 years ago, so i have no idea if it would still work or not.
(I switched all my boxes over to Blackmagic cards to use with both Avid and Resolve.)
Thanks. I just cant get this kona 3g working like it was before the update.
The BMD cards inexpensive and if they work with Avid that is all I need. I do not have thunderbolt on my mobo so I can not use any of the nicer boxes they have...i really do not need anything more than just the sdi out to my panasonic monitor so they are probably overkill anyway.
Thanks again.
You'll need to extract audio somehow, though. MC can only use one breakout box for both picture and sound. You can't route sound to another box or to the internal sound card, while sending out picture through the BMD or any other BOB.
Thats true. Any of the cheaper cards that don't have breakout cables will present this issue.
I have 1 3d extreme card with breakout cables, so it has xlr outputs
My other card doesnt. So the audio travels down the sdi cable to the monitor. I then take an audio feed out of the monitor back to my mixer and on to my speakers. I have no sync issues in this setup.
Audio setup is one reason to consider a breakout box instead of an SDI only card i guess. Depends how good you are at "making it work"
Oh Yea. I was thinking I could just go back to how my audio was before I had the kona. Out of the soundcard and into the mackie mixer.
That is a bummer. I guess I will keep trying to figure out a way to get the kona 3g working correctly again. It is so odd that it works fine until I turn on the audio scrub. Without the scrub I have no issues. I tried reinstalling the drivers a couple of times and no change. I also can not get any changes in the aja control room to fix it.
I am synching interviews and performance takes this morning and it is strange not having the extra monitor to look at!
Here is a question I am fuzzy on because I am not a mac guy so never use thunderbolt.
Can I plug in one of the BMD UtraStudio 4K Mini into the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C port on my mobo? Will this work but just at slower speeds?
sorry if this is an absurd question. Feel free to call me an idiot!
