I choose a reference from my timeline to grade to - in this case a white room and I want to match the white against another shot. This other shot is in a nest. Once I step in to the nest I lose the reference image. In order to grade the two I have to pull the 1st shot out of the nest. Once you choose a reference it should stick no matter if you step in or not.

Just wish that wasn't the answer for everything. It's not a good look when everyone has to use another product to get basic things done. I dream of a better colour correction experience. Round tripping to resolve all the time does not work for my workflow. Does feel pointless asking for CC improvements though given their track record.
Indeed.
