I built this computer for a 4K project on Premiere. Windows 10 64 bit, 32GB RAM,i7processor, AMD5700XT Graphics card, ASUS PRIME Z390-A motherboard. On my other computer, a Windows 7 PRO, I have AVID 8.4.4 running. I want to upgrade my AVID license for my new computer but I am not sure if my config will support AVID & visa-versa. I do have the option of upgrading the Windows 7 computer, if necessary. I'm just a little out of my technical depth :)

Wow, you're really going off the range. :) The AMD5700 looks to be qualified but not the motherboard. Perhaps go for 64GB of RAM too. AVID utiilizes GPU more than CPU. I just got an ASUS ZenBook DuoPro and AVID 2021.2 works on it, but I haven't put it to much of a rigorous test, but it does work. 2021+ requires W10, W7 isn't supported. 

I assume you're familiar with this hardware compatibility document: https://sforce.co/2Nxf1MH Perhaps install a trial version before buying to test it out.

For clarity Avid currently still favours CPU over GPU.

Not much gain with a powerful graphics card. But fast CPU click speeds are important. So less faster cores than more slower cores. 

This is what I was referring to from an AVID doc. I thought I saw something saying AVID takes GPU over CPU in preference, but I can't find that anywhere, so maybe this is what I was thinking of. Sorry if I gave bad info.

The render and playback performance of Media Composer will be greatly improved when using high end graphics cards, as more memory will be made available for the operations. Using lower performing graphics cards will limit the playback and render performance of the application.

Media Composer calculates and shares the processing between the CPU and GPU processors, and determines which processor to use based on which one will give the best performance for the operations involved. For systems that contain a GPU that meets Media Composer's minimum performance requirements, the CPU/GPU load balancing will be done automatically. Yes, mr powell placed too much faith in Avids marketing. Other than that: god bless his soul.
We need CPU mostly, GPU only really helps with 3rd party effects (Boris, sapphire...)

If you tell us your CPU model, we can give better advice of whether to upgrade.
Or even better, try Avid on your current windows 7 machine, see how it goes, make up your own mind.
I guess your motherboard will max out at 6 core CPUs, if you transcode to Avid codecs, you could be fine with current machine and 4k.

If you have antivirus, don't do internet banking and don't give your machine any credit card information
you can probably stick to windows 7 for a while longer too. I still have 7 an my main machine too, but my level of backups makes me immune to ransomware also.
Also win 10 sucks if you ask me. Can’t make up its mind whether it's a tablet or desktop OS. And the bugs, don't get me started on bugs I haven't seen since win95.

My Windows 7 computer is 64-bit with an AMD-8350 8-core processor and 24GB RAM.

I am running AVID 8.4.4 because that was the last upgrade I could get without going to the subscription plan... although a subscription plan is probably in my future.

I am conflicted as to how to move forward with two great computers and how to do a proper hardware upgrade to accommodate AVID.

hmm? You get to keep both computers, right?

The AMD System shouldn't be any good, processor is from 2012 and AMD wasn't very good at the time.
I would continue with the new computer.
If Avid was never installed on a computer before, you'll get a 30 day free trial, so you can check that it works allright.

Keeping both computers but will probably do an upgrade on the older one.

I've got MC21.2 running on the new machine. It seems a little clunky and had some errors starting up which I am working through now.

I do notice that when I step through a cut on an old HD project from my old machine, I get 3 frames of white. In real time it looks like a quick wipe.

The 4K test project I set up is having some display issues which I am also trying to track down.

This is what I was afraid of... it works... kinda.

In this case I'd recommend you go to highest 2018.12.x.
Get used to that, go to something newer next year if you like.

So we have slight issues with display?
Disable "dual copy engine"
Maybe we can find a better GPU driver for you.
Is the card or one of it's sibling certified for avid, what driver versioin?

Or make a search for your card on this forum.

yeah, 70% sure we can fix it - if not you can still swap gpus between your computers.
I think you should disable intel uhd graphics, we don't use it, can only confuse things.
Dual Copy Engine can be found first pic here.

You can try a certified radeon pro driver (98% sure that won't work)
You look at the number of the driver that is certified, check if you can find similar numbers in the drivers for your card.
If that doesn’t work, try a pretty old driver, then the newest you can get.

 

 

For what it is worth, i'm running an i9 intel processor inside a ASUS designaire z390 and a Radeon VII graphics card. I"m assuming this board would be very similar to yours.

No issues with the latest Avid.  At one point i was dual booting this to a hackintosh as well, also running Avid without issue... but then Avid started allowing prores out of windows. :)

 

 

Just replaced my AMD graphics card with the approved NVIDIA P2200. Avid still "sorta" works in a preliminary run through but I notice that in my HD project, with HD footage, the source monitior and the record monitor display anamorphic. If I put a 16:9 Reformat effect on the clip it is letterbox... Why am I seeing 4x3 display in an HD project? And why do I have to put a Reformat effect on an HD clip in an HD project? All settings in Composer are HD 1920x1080. And, when I hit "Home" in the sequence it displays a white frame until I hit play.

The aspect ratio issue doesn't sound GPU related tbh.
The white screen does.

Depending on the project type, you can right click on the video -> Project aspect ratio

NVIDIA P2200 sounds great, make sure you're using Avid's approved driver.
