Best way to get 9:16 out of 16:9 HD?

Its a social media thing as turning the phone through 90 degrees is too much!

So I started off a new project in 1080x1920 format and bought in my 1920x1080 sequence and frame flexed it via crop.  This of course pushes the original 1080 16:9 height to be the 1920 new height so it all gets a bit soggy! This is not the way I thought!

What i really want to do is mask the 1920 sides and crop them off later keeping my native 1080 pic height.  I think the maths are 606w x 1080 height to give a 9:16 frame? So have punched this into mask margins and can adjust my landscape pic framing to be less than awful within this frame!

How do i get that out then as a 9:16 MOV though and clip the sides off?

    Cheers

What compressor do you use? If you edit with a mask or screen markers as a normal 1080 file and you probably want to be 608 width if this goes to any type of MPEG. (multiple of 16 required). So edit as usual but you wont care about the sides much and then export your QT file. Take it into your compressor then crop 656 of each side to get to 608x1080, which sounds odd, but I guess thats right, it's been a while. I use Squeeze.

Thanks - yes i use Squeeze too - I think I can add a filter for crop and maintain the 1080 height?

Yes you would use the crop filter in Squeeze.

Re: Best way to get 9:16 out of 16:9 HD?

    Thanks guys.

Its been really tricky trying to find the correct width for a 9:16 raster with a known 1080 height.  I tried all sorts of online calculators but they arent geared for this - I think its 608x1080 that is required as Fazz said which is an aspect ratio of .56.  Squeeze gives a preview of the crop and a pixel count too, so that is helpful.
