Fusion's Avid Connect Plugin and Fusion 16?

For those of you who aren't aware of the chequered past of this plugin, I suggest you read....

    http://community.avid.com/forums/t/184921.aspx?PageIndex=1

Given that this plugin 'broke' sometime around 2018.7, (and both Avid and Blackmagic were being tight-lipped about offering a solution) I'd pretty much given up on it.

Blackmagic announced Fusion 16 last week, bringing it in line with the numbering system of Resolve. Counter to popular rumours about the demise of Fusion as a standalone product, it seems as if Blackmagic are committed (at least in the short term) of keeping it alive.

    see this article for details...

    https://www.redsharknews.com/post/item/6286-blackmagic-confirms-ongoing-support-for-fusion-with-fusion-16-studio

So this was good news for the future of the Avid plugin, but I couldn't find any recent documentation pertaining to it's installation/use from either Avid or Blackmagic.

Heading over to Blackmagic's download page, I can see Fusion 16 beta available for download, but no sign of the Fusion Connect plugin. In fact, the last release of the plugin was 9.02 in July 2018. However, I found this Blackmagic web page comparing Fusion 16 Studio and the Davinci Resolve version...

    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/fusion/compare

If you look at the bottom of the 'General' section, you'll see it says a big, fat YES for... 'Avid Connect Plug-in for using Fusion from the Media Composer timeline'... when you're running Fusion 16 Studio

So someone at Blackmagic still believes this works with Fusion 16. Unfortunately, there's no other documentation I've been able to find that supports this. In fact I downloaded Fusion 16 Beta Studio, but it comes with Fusion 9 manuals.

Can I be bothered to try it? The omens aren't good and I've got plenty of other things I could be doing with my spare time!

One interesting development is that (according to Blackmagic) if you have a dongle licence for Davinci Resolve Studio, it should now also run Fusion 16 Studio.

Fusion Studio and Avid Connect working with MC has been the case since BM brought Fusion according to BM. Actual usage has been sporadic though plus it worked for some and not others throughout this entire period.

I like Fusion for keying, Pan and Zoom including 3D, blending and titling.  When Edit Connection was working here this became my go to solution for those functions.

When it broke I looked for a new workflow and came up with dropping MC link and opening all project media in a Resolve Project. Deliver from there proxy MC media and an AAF directly into my MXF folder. This ended up being faster than Link and Transcode in MC.

Edit in MC.  Then AAF the edit timeline without media back to the Resolve Project.  This AAF links back to the original camera media.  Open the Fusion Page for required VFX  work.  This eliminates the need for round tripping media for VFX and the functions mentioned above required for After Effects. Result MC is used for what it is really good at and other specialist tools seamlessly used or what MC is not quiet so good at.

I to have Fusion 16 Studio downloaded so I share the same quandary.  Probably not until I have a job requiring Fusion Studio only options.

Re: Fusion's Avid Connect Plugin and Fusion 16?

Fusion 9 is the last release, and that's the current state of the manual. This is a beta, NOT the final release. The updated manual probably won't be released till the product release.

Fusion Connect 9 does not work with the beta. Actually, I think it doesn't work with the current versions of Media Composer. I did some checking. First, the plugin is loaded when Media Composer starts up. However, communication between the Effects Settings window and the plugin is broken. I monitored the file access to both the AVX and LUA files, and they're not being read when you click on the Edit checkbox in the Effects Settings dialog. This suggests that the problem is in the AVX.

I suspect that we'll be seeing a new version of Fusion Connect with the product release.

One thing I haven't tried is to do a base install of MC, Resolve, and Fusion and see if that works (no other effects, no other plug-ins). But right now I'm not really in a position to try that.

One other possibility; I have a Resolve Studio dongle, not a Fusion Studio dongle. Perhaps Fusion Connect is only looking for the Fusion dongle.

I think the Fusion dongle was required to be able to run the actual Studio software, rather than to enable the AVX plugin.

I say this only because it would also (sort of) work without a dongle with the free version of Fusion. Now that a Resolve Studio dongle licence also runs Fusion Studio 16, you should be OK.

As far as I remember about these files, the AVX plugin simply ran the LUA file when you clicked the edit checkbox, which is an external script designed to run in Fusion. I think the reason it never worked properly with the free version of Fusion was that only the studio version would accept/run external scripts. It may be something about the script, rather than the AVX plugin that needs re-writing for the latest versions of MC & Fusion. If you open up the script in something like notepad, the first few lines say something like this...

    -- Script run by BlackmagicEditConnection.avx
-- Starts Fusion, loads comp, sets things up
    -- Version 1.6.1

There's then a load of lines of code (is this Python?). Makes me wonder if there's some clever person out there who could debug this!

Apart from trying this just out of curiosity, there's no way I'm going to spend the time making this part of my VFX workflow until someone at Avid and/or BMD gives me some assurance about their continued support for this plugin.

The script is LUA script, not Python. The LUA script engine is installed with Fusion.

As I mentioned, the LUA script is not being read at all (I monitor the file access when I test the effect).

Surely BMD did this with in the comparison between Fusion 16 in Resolve Studio and Fusion 16 Studio features that you linked to in your first post.

Plus there is the BMD produced Avid Artiste IO hardware that was sold with the Avid Edit Connection AVX as a value added feature.

As I said, it's a beta, not the final release. Apparently there's still work to be done, and not just for Fusion Connect.

Both Avid and BMD have been claiming this for years in their literature, yet about a year ago (after updates to both MC and Fusion) it mysteriously broke, and those of us who complained to them about it got little information or reassurance that it was in the process of being fixed.

It remains broken to this day, which makes it useless if you're relying on it for your business. I just don't want to get involved in another Scriptsyncgate!

Re: Fusion's Avid Connect Plugin and Fusion 16?

I am not sure if this has been mentioned here but Blackmagic also said if you have a Resolve Studio Licence dongle that will now activate Fusion Studio 16.  Only works with the dongle, not the serial number, but BM were giving Resolve Studio out with many Blackmagic cameras and users here may have Resolve Studio for grading anyway:

Re: Fusion's Avid Connect Plugin and Fusion 16?

I can confirm that Fusion Studio 16 works with the Resolve dongle (I pulled mine out, tried to start Fusion and it fails to start). So if you have either a Fusion or Resolve dongle, you can run both Studio products.
