    DNxID Install HELL!

I am not digging the install ordeal with the ID box.

    1. No power cord in packaging.

    2. Registration is far to difficult then it has to be. I need tech support to tell me to click "show" so I could find the installer.

    3. USB3 is not being recognized. After the Black Magic install there is nothing that explaines what to do with the connection! Do I need a driver???? is there something I need to do? The only display is the sourse bar on the box.

    4. I odered a Thunderbolt 3 card- this *** box better connect when I plug it in. The hardware is registered.

    Please respond!

Very disappointed with this install for new hardware.

Are you using this to connect to the computer? This is for storage and such and not for host connection.

    The manual is here.

    You need drivers.

Its pretty straightforward. Install the drivers. Reboot. Plugin via TB cable.

What Dom said - you do need a Thunderbolt 3 connection to your computer, not USB-3 (which can be confusing because they both use the same USB-C connector) and a Thunderbolt 3 cable.  While most laptops have true TB3 connections, some desktop Windows systems come with USB-C connectors that are only USB-3 and need the additional PCI card for TB3.

Depending on your model of PC, you may also have to connect an internal cable if you want to use the TB3 connection to connect to a TB3/DisplayPort monitor.  You don't need to do this for the DNxID, which is pure Thunderbolt 3.

Once you have the connection established, the DNxID should then appear in the Desktop Video software, and also in Media Composer.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

Thanks men, I'm updating my Z840 BIOS now so I can use a TB3 card. Love your forums.

I may be wrong, but I thought the HP Thunderbolt card for the Z840 was Thunderbolt 2, not 3.  So you'll need a Thunderbolt 2 > 3 adapter like Apple's.

    Re: DNxID Install HELL!

I was on the phone with HP today. My BIOS supports TB3. I do have to buy an HP approved card ($206):

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1432667-REG/hp_3uu05aa_hunderbolt_3_pcie_2_port_i_o_card.html

I will need a TB3-TB2 adaptor to run my GTech TB2 drives.

HP siad I have to remove the TB2 card because the Z840 uses slot 1 for TB and can not run 2 differnt TB card types.

They did say it is plug & play and shouldn't be difficult to install (famous last words).

When I read the specs for the DNxID I was under the impression it would run on TB or USB-3. To me it was not clear that the USB-3 port was for external storage. Did any read it the same way?

I thought the z840 TB card is installed on slot 5.  I might be mistaken or HP changed it.

    Re: DNxID Install HELL!

When I look at the B&H link you sent, it only mentions support for the Z4, Z6, Z8.  Hopefully HP is correct and it works in the Z840 as well.  If you do have to resort to the TB2 port with the TB2>TB3 adapter, you should connect your drives first and then daisy chain the DNxID off the drives.

The USB-C port on the back of the DNxID is only designed for peripherals, not host connection - the Avid DNxID product specs page says "It also provides a USB-C port to connect cameras, hard drives, and other media devices to bring fresh footage into your projects."   One point not mentioned is that the USB-C port on the DNxID provides power, so you can run your laptop off the DNxID.  :)

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

    Re: DNxID Install HELL!

After reading Jeremy's comment about the Z4, Z6 & Z8 I called HP back and got a second tech and asked what Jeremy told me. This tech said Jeremy is correct and the HP card I ordered will NOT work in the Z840 !!! He said Jeremy's adaptor suggestion will (should) work. Does anyone have a link to the type of adaptor I need? THANKS Jeremy & Dom, saved me $200!

Marianna, I did find the registration process confusing. The last digit on the plastic Reg code card looked like a smuged "I"- that wasn't it, maybe it's a "1"- nope, a "t"? Nope... it was a "J". Not sure why you used a platic credit type card for the numbers. Then there was the 5"X5" sample software activation card, what was that for? I did call Avid because I couldn't find the link for DNxID software. There was one page that had 8 or so purple icons for hardware selection, but there was no icon for DNxID! I waited 20 minutes and the Avid tech said just to go to "My Avid Products", click "show more" and there was the link for Black Magic software. The install never asked for a code, so I don't know what the confusing "activation" sample card was included. As I mentioned earlier I totally misread how the box worked, I thought it was USB or Thunderbolt, maybe it could have been clearer (or I need to read slower :)

That's my story for now. I'm anxious to get the recommended TB adaptor. If anyone can send a link to what I need I'd be real happy. Thank you all again- Leo

I'm keeping Jeremy's insructions about looping the box & drives!

No, I think that's just a MiniDisplayPort adapter.  We use the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter with good results.

I need to go TB2-TB3 as stated in your earlier post. The adaptor you show needs a TB3 port doesn't it? I only have TB2 ports...
