    DNxHD 1:1 ?

    Hi,

I've just imported a time lapse sequence of JPEGs into Avid, using the option of 1:1 MXF, and the result in playback was quite staggered/jerky.  I then re-imported the same at DNxHD 185 MXF, and playback was smooth.  While maybe there was a qualitative difference, I couldn't really discern anything with my eyes.  Do I take it that 1:1 is literally the best setting?  And maybe my laptop simply has difficulty dealing with 1:1 ?

    Please advise,

    DC

Yes, uncompressed HD has a bandwidth of 120-300 MB/s, whereas DNxHD220 is only 27.5MB/s. So playing back 1:1 HD requires a very fast system with very fast drives in optimal circumstances.

Also note that if your source files are JPEG, they are already compressed, so importing them at 1:1 would most of all just blow up the files size, not much else.

    Uncompressed 1080/25fps is around 100 MB/s. DNXHD 185 is around 23 MB/s.

Likely, your media drive is unable to sustain the bandwidth needed to play the video smoothly. While DNX is a lossy compression, given your hardware it is likely the best for your workflow. DNX185/220 is considered broadcast quality and many primetime shows around the world use it as online codec.
