Hi, here goes the weekend...
problem appeared before randomly but now after upgrading from 8.8.5 to 2018.4 it happens to often
problem: on startup right befor the project or the project selection window opens mc crashes with no message only the option to send a report save log file, wich I will attach
My projects are on an seperate internal drive, my media on an external drive. Permissions for projects are read&write. OS X disk utility shows ownership activation only for system drive. All drives are Mac OS Extended.
what I have done so far:
- new install of mc (new install/ upgrade of OS X 10.10.5 isn't an option for me)
- new user (imported step by step some of my old settings, once it crashed I rolled back to a previously working user state, that now won't work animore)
- read that AVX2 Plugin might be the reason, but there is no particular plugin that constantly seem to crash mc
- temporary solutions: start MC once more, system restart, reinstall of matrox mini driver, start another project by clicking directly on it (avp), delete the settings (MC State, Site Settings, and Site Attributes) there is none of the project settings file (avs) discribed in other threads only a project settings file (xml)
- turned wifi on/off
It looks for me like a cat and mouse game or a house of cards that collapses at some point with no concrete pinpoint for the error. And I dont understand crashreports - only that it points to AvidBinIndexer
Any ideas someone?
cheers , Friedrich

If you create a new project, does it work? That would be the first step. If it does, you can move your bins to that new project and see if they open.

hi Kevin, thanks for your suggestions.
created a new project. one bin in it, with one empty sequence. problem still there.
best chance to get into avid again is to delete
/user/shared user/AvidMediaComposer/avid user/my-user-name/ MCState
and
/applications/Avid Media Composer/Settings/ MCState + Site_Attributes
(Note: I don't delete the Site Settings.xml cause its .xml and not .avs like stated in many places about deleting Settings for diagnostic purpose. I don't see any recent Site Settings.avs at any avid related place on my system.)
Then reboot, start AMC, wait, pray, hope ... its like roulette. If it is not working, start over again until I get into AMC. Then leave the system and AMC on to get work done.
Was it an empty bin? The process crashing is the AvidBinIndexer (Bin Search). Maybe you have corrupted clips in that bin.
Try opening a brand new project from scratch. make sure it opens as expected. Then open one bin at a time in it, and see which (if any) cause the crash.
It was the one and only bin that exists, when you open a brand new project. This very new project was created inside my 'Avid Projects' folder on my seperate internal drive. That Avid Projects folder on my external drive contains several other folders with my avid projects plus one folder with archived avid projects that Avid doesn't see.
Perhaps it's an issue with your external drive.
Create a new project on the internal drive and see what happens. Use the "Shared" option in the project window and the project will be created in the /Users/Shared folder.
I'll try that. This problem wasn't so obvious in AMC8.8.5.. Started with I think 8.9.. So I rolled allways back to 8.8.5., but now I would like to get rid of the problem. I'll report back later when tested the "shared" option.
Try holding the Alt key as the Project opens. That will force all bins to be closed and may avoid search database issues. Then try opening the bins and see if any of them causes a crash.
Try also relocating the Search database in a new project - it's not normally a problem in its default location, but maybe on your system it is for some reason.
Like MikeyB said, it's possible the Search Database is corrupted, and that's causing the crash. I wanted to verify that by creating a fresh project in a different place and see if MC works. If it doesn't, there's something else amiss. If it does work, then we can help get your project back to a working state.
first a correction that I edited already above: My projects are on an extra internal drive (not external as stated before). Media is an external drive.
Created a new project in the shared folder. Problem still there. Sometimes I can start amc sometimes not. Tried also with and without BCC plugins in the AVX2 folder - same result. Deleted all _SearchDB_ files I could find. Same problem.
The ALT-key option didn't work. It only popped up an dialog box "There are multiple audio board on your system - which would you like to use? HW SDK Audio // MacOSX Host Audio // No Audio " . I guess the ALT-open-with-all-bins-closed option would only work if I can get to the projects selction window. If thats the case, Avid is not to crash any more. It crashes before that window. I disabled 'open last project at startup'.
I am still searching for something reproduceable that causes those crashes.
Started to watch the osx console.app event-entries while starting up Avid.
1) 09:52:56 AvidMediaComposer[5035]: dynamic_cast error 2: One or more of the following type_info's has hidden visibility. They should all have public visibility. 18AFileSystemLocator, 14AMacDirLocator, 12AFileLocator.
2) 09:52:56 MIDIServer: ... Error
3) 09:53:30 ...AvidBinIndexer
Thies errors also accured when avid does not crash. ... sorry, I am not so into reading this console lines. Maybe I miss something there. It seems I cannot open and read the avid crash log.
Now I upgraded from OS X 10.10.5 to 10.12.6 with a complete new install. deleted the ssds (plus doing the samsung ssd fw upgrade - because of reported writespeed issues, plus enabled trim), set the raid 0 up anew (backups running of course), installed fresh sierra, installed my programms - still tweeking things here and there, all very timeconsuming - but everything is fine and no amc crashes since.
Mike and specially Kevin - thank you for your support and constructive help. Most appreciated. cheers
