    Color Bars Look too Bright

I just installed the latest version of media composer.  I imported HD_1080 SMPTE_BARS to check that my monitors are calibrated properly for color correction.  Oddly, the bars appear very bright (versus the way they looked on my previous version of avid).  If I calibrate to these bright bars, my video footage becomes extremely dark -- blacks are crushed.  I know that the footage wasn't shot this way.  Am I importing the bars wrong?  Do I need to change any import settings?  Something is off.

    Thanks for the help!

If you imported it using traditional Import command make sure you indicated the correct color space. It should be 16-235 video range and not full 0-255 RGB range.

If you AMA'd it, check Source Settings for the same issue.

It sounds like you are on to something.  I can't find the place to change these settings on import or AMA.

When I imported the bars, my color levels were set to:  SCALE FROM FULL RANGE TO LEGAL RANGE.  When I change it to:  DO NOT MODIFY, TREAT AS LEGAL RANGE, the bars import darker and seem to be at the correct levels.  Is that accurate???

Check them on the Waveform Monitor in Color Correction mode (after import I mean). But yes, I would expect color bars etc would need to be imported without any luma level changes.

You mention things looking “right”, but I don’t know which type of monitor you are looking at. If you’re looking at computer monitors or video monitors.

I believe that setting put me back on track.  I am sure that's what I had my last software set on and I did it once and never looked back.  Thanks for the help.
