Interestingly, although this is apparently a major version number update, dongle users appear not to have to update their dongles if on version 8.0. Well, I certainly didn't, anyway.
Also, reading the announcement through I see this.
camoscato:Starting with this release, the editing application version numbers will use the year followed by the month.
jwrl:Interestingly, although this is apparently a major version number update,
This numbering system will make it harder to know if an update is "incremental" or "major". As we climbed through 8.x.x you got an indication of the amount of changes under the hood by the numbering convention. A jump to a MC 9.x.x would imply a lot changed or was added, a jump from 8.9.x to 8.10.x would indicate new features but perhaps not a major jump and a x.x.1 to x.x.2 jump perhaps indicated only bug fixes.
This new year/month system makes it much harder to know when something more substantial has happened under the hood? Could Avid clarify perhaps, outside the readme, how system admins and users will easily be able to tell this by simply looking at the version number?
Vote 1 - Dongles.
UME an old engine, now with 4K, mags and furry dice....
camoscato: Bug Number: MCDEV-5650. When working with Panasonic LongG media, you might receive an “SFPlayConsumer Timeout” error if audio waveforms are enabled. Workaround: Turn off audio waveforms. Bug Number: MCDEV-5385. Multicam editing with Panasonic LongG media is not supported with this release.
I do not quite understand.
Is not supported, does it mean I will not play at all? Or that there are still problems with TC?

Also, November & December (.11, .12) will appear before February (.2) in alpha-numereric organized lists. Better to use 2 digits to number months (.01, .02, .03, ..., .12).
Check out Marianna's post on the new versioning scheme Here.

jwrl: Do we take this to mean that there will be continuous "updates" through the year that do little more than ensure that we need a fresh download each month? I sincerely hope not! It will make my renewal decision a lot easier to make at the end of the year if so.

There will be continuous updates throughout the year (just as there were in 2017). This suggests that we will see monthly defect fixes and periodic intoduction of new features, I suppose.
I don't understand why you assume the 'do little more' part of your statement.
I like the new numbering system. It is unambiguous. I also don't think the zero padding of the month is necessary. If you are searching for latest and you have a year's worth of these in the same folder, sort by date should help. Just my opinion, of course.

I feel the stream of updates, whether it is monthly or quarterly, is a good sign and looking back at the total output in 2017, I think it all bodes well for us.
I remember the old days when you’d wait with great expectations for a new update, and when it finally arrived there was often a question of whether or not you wanted to pony up for it. I see this new paradigm as smart, logical, more transparent.

I'm seeing that this version is recommending Interplay 3.7 or higher. I have a multi-part question.
1. There is not a matrix showing 2018.1 with Interpplay versions yet. Previous versions of MC recommended Interplay 3.7 but supported 3.3 Will this be the same in 2018.1?
2. When upgrading from Interplay 3.3 which I currentlly have. Do you need to also update the Servers Interplay version or will it work with just the Client updates?
Thanks

David,
Many of the KB doc's are in process of being updated. it takes a little over 48 hours for them to complete.
Media Composer v8.7 and higher ( including 2018.1) requires Avid Interplay client v3.7 and higher.
this has the scoop you need..... Ping me if stuck

Thats what I was afraid of. I have never been comfortable with upgrades on the server side.
Thanks for the info.

Can AVID post when the new version of NewBlueTitlerPro is available? Installed the update and downloaded what seemed a newer version of the NBtitler ap from my master account, but on first install titles are water-marked.
For what it's worth: Ap Man shows "current-Installed: 5.0.170821" for NBTP in the plug-ins (current, but not functional, yet)
Just did an uninstall of NBTP / restart / install with the NBTP downloaded today (11am CST) and water mark is gone!
Marianna,
I found this doc which shows that it is supported.(S) is that not correct?
