Beware, two of our edit suites have automatically forced a windows update to a new build today, even though windows update was disabled in services.Tad annoying, as it messes up a graphics driver, which then needs reinstalling.
One more reason why I've resisted going to Win 10.
I know I'll eventually have to make the transition when one or more of the applications I use refuses to run in Win 7.
I was told the best way to disable automatic updates in Win 10 was using the Local Group Policy Editor, changing the settings to 'Notify for download and notify for install'. I was also warned that when you finally decide it's best to install the update, it may reset your group policy back to automatic updates & install.
And don't even get me started on the amount of personal data Win 10 collects about you and your computer, if you use the default settings.
The other fix is to set the network interface as a metered connection. This then allows you to prevent downloading updates automatically.
For all its issues I do find windows 10 systems to be slicker and smoother than windows 7. and MC seems to perform better.

I do however, understand the argument for the forced updates. The relentless attempts of the hackers make defending a large number of windows variations difficult. I have in the past seen too many unpactched system spreading malware.
A few years ago, "Patch Tuesday"was dreaded. In recent years, there has been much less unintentional breakage of legimate systems. I believe the large number of people involved with the Windows Insider Program has provided usefull feedback to Micorsoft, therefore reducing problems.

Have system restore enabled. If an unwanted uodate causes issues (rare) then roll back and defer updating until; resolved. Safer that way.
We use the free tool "O&O ShutUp10" to disable forced Windows and driver updates and all kinds of other Win10 annoyances. This tool is a real gem. Give it a try!
It's even better when the update fails, which happened on my general purpose system. It destroyed the boot loader leaving me with a system that I'm going to have to manually repair. Lot's O' fun!!

This is why I still make disk images of my boot drives on a weekly basis. Non of these restore points are going to help you if you can't boot up!
Modern backup software (such as Acronis) makes this pretty easy. You can simply do your backup at the end of the day, and the software will handle shutting down your machine for you. If disaster strikes, simply pop in a USB stick (with the backup software loaded onto it) and tell it where to find your backup. You'll be up and running within the hour!
Normally I would have ghosted the drive, but I wasn't expecting the update and my general system is W10 home, not pro, so I don't have the policy editor to disable the updates and I leave the W10 update service running for security patches.
I do in fact have images, but nothing in the past month (I make sure my wife's system is backed up, but I'm a little lacking on my own; go figure).
I am back up and running. I rebuilt the boot sector by hand. Took me about an hour.
