Does anyone know if you can install MC 8.8 on a approved HP Z800?
that's LGA 1366, about 2010, right?
should work.
get a current gpu if you're feeling fancy.
like gtx 1070.

OK Kids. Thanks for the great advice.
I only have 12gB of RAM can I or should I get more?
yes daddy,
16 alltogether currently makes for smooth sailing.
your machine is triple channel, only adding 3 RAM modules at once makes sense.
old ram might be pricey, you could get away with 3x2GB,
or another 12 if you find the cpu performance sufficent for the time being.
if the cpu clock is at least 2,6Ghz, i'd add ram, new gpu, usb3 card and ride that sucker 3 more years.
I got 4 HP Z800 running fine @MC 8.8, but we are on Win10 and with 32GB RAM, so i don't know if it is running fine on Win7 with less than 16GB.
One again, thanks for all your help.
Two more quick questions.
I found a good deal on 6x4GB ram sticks. Should I add or replace them into my 6x2GB existing ram. Total of 24GB or 36GB.
Also, was thinking about buying a M2000 over the GTX 1070.
Which would give me the best performance and keep the Avid happy?
Thanks again.
can go either way.
having all sticks identical is somewhat preferrable.
if you're going all in with new too, i'd suggest 32Gb.
i'd go for a gtx 1070, about 3x more powerful than M2000, all you sacrifice really is 10bit display capability.
you can get them with pseudo watercooling, got, one, pretty nifty
check your case if you can replace rear fan with 12cm one.
also gtx needs one pci-e power connector from your PSU, I'd be suprised if there wasn't one.

First generation z800 systems do not support the processor instruction set for media composer versions beyond v8.2 or 8.3. Must be a 2nd gen z800, so dual 2.66ghz z5650 CPUs. First gen Z800 with 2.26ghz will not let the application install.

Thank NYnutz, that's great info. I'm running Symphony 6.5 on a Z800 dual 2.66. I'd think 12GB would be fine. 6.5 runs like a champ with PS, Squeeze others open and/or rendering. I'd like to upgrade but I work on projects over many years and I'm affraid my Saphirre, NewBlue, Titler, and/or Boris effects would break. I used Deko or Inscriber for a logo bug circa 2008 on 6 hours of programming and an AVX upgrade broke the bug and it was a huge pain, it wouldn't even load the timelines.

Great Info. How do I tell if I have 1st or 2nd gen?
I have dual x5570 CPUs.
Go to Control Panel\System and it tells you what CPU you have. "(2 processors)"

One correction on my earlier post: it should read "x5650" not"z"
From the MC v8.3 software readme:
"Supported Systems Message A new message has been added to this release that detects if you are installing on an unsupported system: “Your system does not support this version of Media Composer | Software. Please consult the Specifications information on Avid.com for supported configurations. Media Composer | Software installation will be aborted.” Media Composer 8.3 systems require a micro architecture that supports the SSE 4.1 CPU Instruction set. Most systems shipped since 2008 with four or more processor cores, i.e. Quad core, will include this functionality. Systems shipped before 2008 are not likely to support this functionality and Media Composer will fail to install. If you receive the message, go here to review system requirements."
In the MC 8.3 readme, it drops all z800 dual quad core from the qualified list. The only z800 hardware listed as qualified for MC8.3 is the Z800 with DUAL 6-core Xeon x5650 CPUs and quadro fx 3800 or quadro 4000 gpu. I can confirm that my fleet of 10 dual 2.93ghz z800 workstations would not install MC v8.5 or higher with the above message.
I currently have a z800 dual x5650 machine with 24GB ram running MC v8.6.5 for testing. It may not be qualified or perform especially well for editing, but MC will install and run.

So a Z800 Xeon X5650 @ 2.67GHz 2.66GHz (2 proccessors) which if I read the specs correctly has 6 cores, w/Quadro 4000, would be supported. Do I understand you correctly?
