Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro - Does it make any difference with MC 8.6?

I just received shipment on a fairly powerful HP ZBook mobile workstation, I intend to use for offline purposes...

It came with Windows 7 Pro installed, but the package also included the Windows 10 Pro OS on a separate DVD.

Before I install Media Composer 8.6 on the system, it would be so helpful to know if it makes better sense to simply ditch Windows 7 Pro altogether, and install Windows 10 Pro.

Is there any advantage in performance, or other factors, regarding MC with Windows 10 over Windows 7?  I don't really care that much about any other software... This system is dedicated only for Avid editing.

I couldn't find the answer by searching the web, so I'm hopeful I'm can get some insight from some real pros.

I'm grateful for any insight, anyone can lend. Thank you!

From 7 to 10 , and with that M4000 card , about 30 - 50 % better rt playout performance with unrendered effects and Win 10

Thank you, Tomas!   That's plenty of reason to go through the trouble of making the upgrade.  I kept looking at it from a software performance perspective and never considered how the Win 10 OS would affect the GPU's perfomance... Makes me feel a bit silly!  Again, I so appreciate that valuable insight!

Hi David , it was already under the number versions of Win 10 that I initially noticed how much win 10 improved the Gpu usage in Avid and I´ve been on Win 10 ever since, sort of running my own beta tests until it finally was officially certified.

Hi Fred, both my Matrox units, the Mini Max and the LE, works excellent under Win 10.

Re: Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro - Does it make any difference with MC 8.6?

That seems an unusually large improvement, are you sure a lot of that is not just due to the usual boost in performance, that occurs with a fresh install, before all the clutter and drag of various software/updates takes place over time. I refused the free upgrade to W10 because I don't like the direction Windows is heading. If I want spyware installed on my computer, I am quite capable of installing it myself, I don't want it incorporated as part of the operating system.

It is quite difficult to refuse anything that's free and I know much of the spy 'features' can be turned off but the more research I did, the more I read about those spy 'features' turning themselves back on as part of various updates. If you have w10, it is good practice to check after any update, whether 'features' you have disabled have remained disabled.

I would have prefered an option to pay for a version of W10, that didn't have the incorporated spyware but Microsoft seems to have decided, that data and information gathering, is how it's software development will be funded for the foreseeable future.

It´s actually even better, if not something have changed since I totally switched, I have a test project setup for own playout tests.

Re: Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro - Does it make any difference with MC 8.6?

Microsoft seem to have done something right with W10, I still have a laptop running Win Vista 32bit, so I get a reminder, on an almost daily basis, of how bad things can get. An SSD would probably sort it out and I may bend my principles and get W10 but more likely I will be inclined to hold out until W10 is unavoidable.

It may not matter to many people but I think people should be aware or information like this and balance it against performance improvements, when making a choice on upgrading or not.

Re: Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro - Does it make any difference with MC 8.6?

Win 10 is performing better than its predecessors, and it doesn't make sense to setup a new system with an ageing OS, but it's a privacy vampire, and a shopping centre either. At setup time You do not want to go for "express setup", or whatever it's called, but You want to double check all the options to disable all of the privacy related "features"; otherwise not only You'd be trusting MS too much, but the system will also slow down, being busy exchanging information with the MS servers. Do not create a "One" account, You'll loose some cloud features, and gain privacy, and again You won't waste computing power to keep in touch with MS. Once You're done setting up the OS, and You'll finally fire it up, You'll notice that the start menu is cluttered with "goods for sale", mostly games and MS software, and unrequested push info, such as news and weather, right click on each item You don't want/need, or simply has no reason to exist in an editing system, and uninstall it, these are not simle ads, but real applets draining resources that You'll have to uninstall, just hiding them won't cut it. It takes some time, but You'll end up with somenthing resembling a workstation, and not a sort of cross between a shopping mall and a news TV station. Worth to disable the interface tweaks expressly thought for smartphones and tablets too, which are useless on a laptop/desktop, and only needed to make You feel home when You purchase that Windows mobile phone (please note that I did not write smartphone). It's not like setting up a Win 7 computer, but after the initial waste of time You'll enjoy. I suggest You instruct the system to delay as much as possible automatic updates, and install the MS utility "windows update show hide", which You will run whenever Win 10 will notify new updates, to prevent the installation of unwanted stuff and uncertified nVidia drivers, for this to be effective do not connect the system to the internet during setup, or the updates will be installed without Your permission, and getting rid of them will be tricky. If You search the forums perhaps You'll find threads on setting up Win 10 to run MC with more in depth information. HTH

Ok, wow - interesting about performance between versions. More info on stability and/or known differences would be nice.

What do you do about updates? OSX is easier to follow about which point release Avid supports. I feel Windows 10 updating is floating.

Has anyone seen a writeup from Avid on Windows 10? Which is preferred from Avid?
All we saw was sudden support and then nothing - some difficulties with correct nvidia drivers different from win 7 to 10. Staying at 7 seems safe still, but is Avid mostly developing for 10 and keeping support for 7 or the other way around?

Wish there was a document like we use for setting up 7 with performance and stability in mind for 10 as well. Avid, ayone on this? :) Also - Microsoft should give business users on win10pro option of actually going for extra stability and perfromance out of the box - wishful thinking.
