I'm having some problems with renders recently.
First when I render some effects, the blue dot stays there and playback is sluggish. If I try to render them again, it still takes the same amount of time to render them and the blue dot stays there like if the first render never happened. As soon as I close the project and reopen it, the blue dot disappear and the effect seems to be rendered. Didn't find anything consistent. It just happens sometimes and with different effects.
Other problem is with rendered effects not clearing themselves when I modify them. Let's say I have a stack of 3 effects on 3 different layers, when I make a modification to the effect on layer 2, the render on layer 3 is not cleared. I have to clear it manually to see the modification. That's supposed to be automatic, isn't it?
I'm using version 8.5.2
I don't have an answer for you; you have found the workaround, which is to close and re-open. (I can't remember how deep you need to go - close the Bin, Project or Application - to make it work.)But of note is that I'm on 8.2.5 and see the same issue from time to time. And I'm on an Interplay system.
Neil.

Hi Isaac! Thanks for the reply.
I am on Yosemite 10.10.5
Perfect.
I'm sure I'll be banned for saying this, but 8.5.x isn't ready for primetime. Unless you need a specific feature in 8.5.x, or you're in a shared environment that requires it, try this:
1. Uninstall MC 8.5.2.
2. Install MC 8.4.4.
3. Remove OpenIO_VirtIO.acf - http://community.avid.com/forums/t/135998.aspx
4. Disable Fast Scrub.
5. Launch MC 8.4.4. Report back.
Also, Montreal rules.
