Avid on my laptop wont import or link to .mov files. i think its because i do not have quicktime installed on my laptop and thats because of the security threat due to Apple ending its support on Windows. When I attempt to AMA link to .mov files it says "Unable to link to file or volume. You may need to download AMA plugin...." and when I try to import it reads "the file format is not supported for import''. There are no / or . or any other characters in the file path. i downlowded the quicktime AMA plugins from Avids website and still no luck. I am running Media COmposer 8.4.2
Also whenever I startup Avid an error appears that reads "Quicktime is not installed on ths system. It is strongly recommened that you install the latest version. Some effects wont function properly without it".

The KB article states that you have to uninstall both MC and QT, then re-install QT with the limited options, then install MC again. I'm trying to confirm if this is actually necessary given that you can go into the windows control panel and select "uninstall a program," then highlight Quicktime and select "change" instead of "uninstall." This gives you a menu where you can select "Modify," at which point you can modify the QT installation choices in the way the KB article suggests. After you do this, QT is reinstalled with the correct options. This is vastly quicker and easier than fully uninstalling and reinstalling everything, and as far as I know, has the same end result -- i.e. Avid continues to work normally, and QT is installed with limited options.
Can someone confirm whether or not this is not a viable solution? Is the full uninstall/reinstall process just being "extra safe," or is there some actual reason to doing it this way? Nobody has addressed the idea of doing a "change/modify" install from the control panel, but I can't tell if this is just because nobody has fully looked into this as a possible solution.
Thanks for any solid information on this,
L
Hi,Personally I uninstalled QT completely and then I riinstalled the essential core + QT player and especially not the rest (plugin, etc ...). No more message of MC on startup. Then I went on QT file read test servers to ensure that I could not read QT file from the web (which is the major security flaw). Each time the browser replied that the file is not recognized and that I had to install QT.Initially, this test assures me that I should not accidentally read a .MOV from the web and from there be infected. Now it should remain cautious pending AVID make us a lasting solution without QT.The links :https: itascacc.ims.mnscu.edu/shared/MnScuStudentTutorials/MnSCUBrowserTest.html (very good)http: www.medicalrounds.com/quicktimecheck/tr ... oting.htmlhttp: www.grandprospect.com/vtour/qttest.htmhttp: www.csus.edu/atcs/tools/mediaserver/wiz ... output.htmhttp: quicktime.tc.columbia.edu/users/iml/movies/mtest.htmlhttp: trailers.apple.com/trailers/http: www.ist.rit.edu/~rpv/local/tutorials/embedding_video/http: www.uwosh.edu/faculty_staff/liske/music ... estQT.htmlhttp: mac.sillydog.org/qt/mov/embed_stream.php
Can you point me to a reliably safe QT test server?
Thanks,
Hi,For me the best test site is:https://itascacc.ims.mnscu.edu/shared/MnScuStudentTutorials/MnSCUBrowserTest.htmlThere is a link on this page is to read a .MOV file: TestQuicktime.movInstead of seeing the video, I have a message:The Following are reconnu MIME type (see list below)Also this page returns the MIME types recognized by my browser: firefox and no Quicktime. We must remain cautious but don't import movs from russion pron sites and you'll be fine
A few things puzzle me about all this. First of all, Apple still offer Quicktime for Windows for download without, as far as I know, any warning.
Secondly, did these vulnerabilities always exist or come at a certain version. If they always existed, we then have to either believe that Apple didn't know and suddenly discovered them or always knew but let some of the video industry become partially dependent, only to suddenly annouce the problems with EOL. This suggests some sort of sabotage of Windows users.
There doesn't appear to be any information, apart from vague calls to uninstall because of some vague security threats.
It's impossible to know when the problem was introduced as that would require going back through every version of QT, and that's not going to happen. Given the nature of the bug which allows the attack (failure to length check incoming data against the size of the buffer, a rookie programming error) I suspect this has been there for some time. By now everyone who codes knows (or should know) to check the size of the data.
As to whether or not people at Apple knew, I doubt it. It's a trivial fix. It could have been fixed any time in numerous releases. I'm having a hard time understanding why Apple won't fix the code, even if they intended to EOL the product all along. It's nothing more than adding the equivalent IF statement (if data_size > buffer_size throw exception "Bad Data").
As to the threat, there's nothing vague about it. it's quite specific as to how a malicious piece of media could feed arbitrary code for execution.
