    m2t files AMA link

    Hello everyone.

A client just brought over a series of .m2t files (HDV 720p from a JVC GY-HD100 camcorder). He captured by tape, using Tmpeg Enc Mastering Works and as far as I know this is a common format for HDV. When I try to AMA link to the media in both MC v.7 and 8.4.2 it gives me an error of a missing AMA plugin. I have almost all AMA plugins installed, apparently there's one missing or doesn't exist for this type of file. Which one is it? I'd be glad if anyone could point me to the right direction because neither the camcorder or the relative JVC VCR work with MC to let me capture the footage again.

    Thanks.

    Re: m2t files AMA link

HDV capture is currently broken. It is slated to be fixed in an upcoming release. Nor can you AMA link to the media as it's not folder based.

There is a free application called HDVSplit which you can use. It doesn't have a log feature, so you either have to scan the entire tape (it stops gracefully when it hits the end of the tape) or hover over the record and stop buttons in the app for each section (I find it easiest to scan whole tapes and then edit out the unwanted parts). By default HDVSplit will also split scenes on the tape into separate files, but you can turn that off if desired.

M2T files will fast import into MC, and while not as fast as linking it's reasonably quick. There is a paid plug-in for MPEG-2 based media from Hamburg Pro Media called EASY4avid, but it's 399 euros or around $437 US. I've never tried it so I can't offer any opinions.

In short, just use Import instead of Link and it should work.

Yes, thank you so much :-) I already knew about HDV Split but it never worked well with this certain camcorer or VCR. It's a common issue that's been widely  reported with no luck of a fix. Still, TmpegENC does a great job capturing and splitting according to timecode, so problem solved in this area. What bothered me was the lack of an AMA plugin, but since fast import does the job as I found out myself, there's no need to do anything else :-) I'm used to first AMA linking and then transcoding, so fast importing never hit me as an option. In any case, I did fast import and everything works like a charm. Again, thanks for the help. I appreciate it :-)

Hamburg Pro Media no longer offers this product and it should be removed from Avid's website if it hasn't already.

    Re: m2t files AMA link

To my surpise, I read in the 8.5 Avid_Supported_Video_File_Formats pdf doc that HDV (m2t) is supported for:

    1. import from file

    2. link to file via AMA

    3. export to file

Sure, fast import works very well, but AMA link not (as explained in this thread) and I wonder if this is a simple document typo ?

I'm pretty sure it's a type (or someone confused M2TS, which does link, with M2T).
